About 2-3 years ago I bought several dozen snares. I believe they are Dakota Line. MN has since changed the law regarding break away devices. I assume the snares I bought don’t have them but how do I tell and if not how do you add them.

I’ve got close to 10 dozen various snares that I really would like to use.

Thanks in advance

At the lock there will usually be either a J hook or Shook attached to the lock. That's the usual one. Some people use the amberg release ferrules which looks like a long stop button that's used in place of the regular stop buttons. There's also tear away locks that don't require breakaways as they are breakaways themselves, assuming the locks are inside the breaking strength requirement of your state

Snares that have deer stops that can't be removed from the snare (if they are the ministop type you could pinch them on their sides so they might release) you'll need to cut the cable at the lock as close as you can to the ferrule. Add the breakaways then and replace the end stop. Be advised that you might get deer stop loop size if required too small to be legal. Not by much though so you might have to move the deer stop if you can.

If you don't have deer stops, cut the loop end of the snare, add breakaway to the lock and rethread the snare

As a side note--if you use the break away ferrules, you need a special crimper so they release at the correct poundage.

Deer stops can be nipped off with a simple little pair of bolt cutters even if they used 6-32 nuts for them. I'd cut the end stop off, the deer stop off, and rebuild the snares from scratch with an release ferrule for a break away device so long as the cable is one of the tested types they make the Release Ferrule BADs for.

I have rebuilt a few for others, shoot me a PM if you want.
