Do you find wood splitting or rock mauling hard on your lower back? Part of me thinks it might be hard on the back, but part of me thinks it will strengthen back muscles if done properly & in moderation. I've heard that strengthening a persons core helps mitigate short & long term back pain. Strengthening the core section of my body seems easier said than done. Stretching might be important too, I'm not sure. I've also thought about using a back support brace, but I've heard that can hamper the ability to increase strength. An ice pad after hard work might help too.

Flexibility is a big issue I do yoga to try and maintain some flexibility but it’s tough as I have 4 vertebrae that have fused themselves together with arthritis and because of this I have to be cautious with ice because it bothers my arthritis but helps the muscles. As for core strength it does a lot and I try to gain it but it doesn’t seem to get better fast, one big thing is the better your core is the better your balance will be.

Yes, the core impacts so many things. I would like to have a stronger core.

I suspect most people have 2 problems: a gut, and a weak back.

No I’ve been trying for years to get back to a flat stomach but with spine problems I can’t do the weight lifting that would eliminate it quickly so I’m left with stretching and maintaining my size to hope to lose diameter on my waist.

Don't use a steel handle splitting maul. Way too much shock load. I prefer wood and/ or fiberglass type splitting mauls. Just my 2 cents. I think splitting by hand is somewhat easier than using a wood splitter for the giant pieces. We have a not ergonomic wood splitter. It has plenty of power but I strain my muscles trying to get the big pieces on the splitter. The wood splitter is faster but I am not a huge fan. I hope what I just typed made sense LOL.
