I have a pack of snares that I started off using for dogproofs and footholds to tie to trees and drags, that way I didn't have to depend on rebars. Caught a lot of coons with them and they put a whoopin on the wire. Now I want to get into snaring this year and my snares won't hold good shape. Is there any way to temper the metal or something to get back that teardrop loop? It's not like the wire is frayed or anything

It could probably be done with a lot of time, but it would be easier and better to cut off the components and reuse them to build yourself some new snares from new cable if you want them to work to their best potential. Here's a video I made to show you how to build them...

A lot depends on the cable, and the animal, and how you set the snare(location).
I re use a lot of snares that have caught cats-both 7x7 and 1x19 1/16.
All my snares are lethally set.Cats die very quickly in a snare when neck caught with adjacent kill sticks Most of the time you can open the snare and with a few bends between your thumb and two fingers it will be round again and perfect to use.If there are any sharp kinks these cannot be re used. The components can be re used with new cable. If you tie off with wire, always carefully check and re-inforce or replace the tie off wire.Any stress/bend/kink in wire can cause a fail.
Foxes are harder on snares and will kink the cable.Almost all the snares cannot be put back into service due to excessive deformity.
For wolves I will recycle the snares, using the locks a couple times until they get too worn, and since the snares are long,I cut off the kinked part and use the rest as double looped extensions.

Any animal held alive in a snare will wreck the snare(and often wreck itself fur wise),and wear the lock, often beyond re use.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Bottom line : You bought garbage snares to start with.

All cable is NOT created equal ! Buyer beware !

Buy new snares
When you do the math. The snare is the cheapest thing on the snareline
Also the most important
