Just introducing myself. A greenhorn from Sterling. Looking to learn trapping, in particular the equipment and methods used during the fur trade era.

Welcome. White17 can probably help you with the EARLY years of trapping. If he takes a liking to you, he might even go so far as to share some his early efforts at wooly mammoth herding, and saber-tooth snaring!

Just doing what I want now.

But first you have to take some lessons in reading smoke signals from White17.
Is there a whole book on snaring Short nosed bears of his still around ?

Well, while he may have left a few for seed, Ol'Blister might need to wake him up.
Barb, a little help, here?

You guys must be really lacking in anything substantial to contribute. It's sad when people have to make themselves feel big by ridiculing their betters.......er uh seniors.....I mean.

I have to ask...............is there a lot of corn grown in Sterling ?? laugh (See....that's a substantial question designed to make the new guy feel welcome)

Take a look around on face book. I seen some site but can't recall the name were members trap now like in the fur trade area. This is probably not the place for you to learn that style on here. Most of the trappers on wilderness trapping are pretty serious about what they do. Fur trade is just not their style. If you want to learn modern era trapping you could do that here. Keep your corn dry!

white17, cornstalk was given to me as a name in 1976 at a AMM Rendezvous cause I was tall and skinny. I'm still tall. ;-)

otter3006 thanks for the trapping class info. Unfortunately got to take a guy flying tomorrow, although a retired airline pilot and instructor he just moved up here so is a greenhorn at Alaska flying. I'll PM you so I can catch the next class. Thanks.

And thanks Slick Pan for the tip.

I just drove through your neck of the woods yesterday - on the way home from a hunt on Kodiak Island. You got sone nice fresh snow, and should be able to find a lynx in your neighborhood.
Lots of coyotes there. And you are also on the fringe of the marten area. The more you go toward Coopers Landing and Seward, the better is what the local Biologists tell me. I also have to believe you have wolverine there at the foothills of the mountains. The big fire that came through the fall of 2019 seems to be a "dead zone" - but the fringes of it should be good. I'm not much of a help when it comes to the vintage ways. I like Conibears and snares, and am learning to use leg holds as that is my weakness. Good luck, but this is a good place to start as the guys on here can be very helpful.
