I would want the trigger on the bottom, likely in that situation, on a KB stabilizer.
With the trigger on top, you'll kill a lot of muskrats, as they normally will enter a large hole, half above water, on the surface, the trigger on the bottom, bent in an L shape or over to one side, will miss some.

That said, Not a high productive set on beaver that far out of water, but can catch them.
I use a lure on a twig, shoved in the roof , beyond the trap.
Might take a few otter

Might as well catch the rats they are probably worth more then the beaver.

Well this section of the creek was a bust for beaver they must of moved on, i had these three traps set for 5 checks and the only thing i caught was 2 muskrats.
Pulled these traps so my son could use them 1 1/2 mile up stream.

A lot of guys here when trapping beaver in the fall at the house will set a funnel trap in the shallow entrance for the bonus rats.
I learned that trick from Jim Gibb in an article in the fha magazine-works good.
Almost every beaver house has rats living in it and they use the shallow entrance most often.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

With those stands I also have the triggers on them bottom. Right now I am never disappointed catching rats. They will be worth more.
