Looked at the MTP site to compare to new price. Looks like out of stock.

Thanks for trying
I don’t need them this year but want to start gathering good steel but not 100% on the best traps for the $ I should be shopping for for yote and cats. I have read yes off set and no off set for cats because it will tear up their foot. Then no bs k9 traps are the best then mb650 are the best then Bridget #3
Idk my (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) head is spinning but I just would get to buy a bunch of one kind and wish I got something else. Just hoping one of you yote pros can recommend the best one to get.
I’m not running a professional line. Just taking the kids out and doing the best I can. Maybe 75-100 traps all together including coon and beaver

The trouble with a public forum is u will hardly ever get a clear cut answer to what is best. I've seen people who have never caught a coyote post what is the best trap or lure on here. Just because there's a lot of information doesn't mean it is all good. The trap itself will play a pretty small part in how much fur u catch. A lot of quality traps that will get the job done to chose from.

Yeah that makes a ton of sense!!!
Take everything with a grain of salt I guess
I always used to run dukes because I was young and didn’t have hardly any money and they always served me good. I’m a little older now and learned to take your time and do it the right way once. And you get what you pay for sometimes and sometimes things are stupidly over priced for the name.

That’s not a bad price if traps are pretty much new. Can’t go wrong with either the mb 650s or the k9 extremes. Like you have already stated you get what you pay for. Nothing wrong with dukes traps not the kind of build quality I look for in a trap but they still have served there purpose to many great trappers over the years. Maybe try getting a couple of each trap and try them out side by side and see witch trap accommodates you as the trapper best. As far as the mb 650 build quality and performance the price of the trap is worth every penny.

Yes Sir is right. Lots of opinions will be given on traps So here is mine = I catch 400-500 coyotes a year in = MB 550’s and MJ 600 Sterling. Those are my 2 favorite traps. MB 550’s = I have use them since about 2009 or 2010. Cant says how many 1000’s of coyotes I have caught in them but I averages 300 plus coyotes in those years. Every year The MB 550 os is a very good trap. Most of the time it need VERY little to make it catch coyotes. Some may disagree. BUT in 34 years of trapping. In MY opinion the MB 550’s are the best out of the box trap their is. I have used them in multiple states to catch coyotes. MJ 600 Sterling = The Greatest Coil Spring ever made ? I have over 100 of them. Its a supper strong 4 coil trap that comes threw wet Alabama mud like a champion. Wish I had 100 more of them!!!! I dont like the MB 650. Sorry. But I dont like the dead spot on it. Have tried to work it out. But just cant like it

Me I started with some 550 but was getting too many toe catches with them so I moved up to Bridger dog on #3s. Sterlings are awesome but out of my price range. One guy I listen on here when it comes to coyotes likes the Montana #3 which is very reasonable priced simple designed trap that gets the job done for him and he knows how to get the job done as good or better than most. If I was going to retool my trap selection I would look at the MTP's Alpha trap also.

Thanks guys
Really appreciate it. I’ll stick to only 2 dozen for now and I’ll see how they are. I’m sure they all are great traps for what I’m going to be doing. I can see that using a trap your confident in is a huge key. Experience will make it so trap and pan placement are perfect. I’m sure steeltraps could take coyote in a #1 1/2 duke if he needed to as I’ve seen his many pics but I’m not that good on the canines yet and I need all the help I can get.
I’ll try a few dozen on the top ones I can find and see what build me the best confidence and catches.

Thanks SwampDust. That reminds me of a story about 1 & 1/2s. When I first out full time trapping. Many years ago. I took on a job that was Really to big for me. I was catching coyotes BUT the land manager found out I only had 30 traps out on 9000 acres and insisted I but more traps. SO i bought = 3 dz 1 &1/2 Bridger 4 coil specials. They were 85 dollars a dz at the time. I caught coyotes and go my first Large pay check and sold those traps LOL! Point is you can catch coyotes in any traps BUT some will do bettter than others. Sometimes it depends on soil type. IF you like a dogless trap? I have handled 1 MTP Alpha. It seems like a good trap to me. Have also sets LOTS of K9 Extreme’s and JRs. From what I could tell = of mt friends traps. They were good traps. Find what works for you. I LIKE = round jaws. Wire levers and Pit Pans. MY perfect trap = doesnt exsist yet. BUT = MJ 600 Sterling is close

A 550 inside jaw spread is the same as the outside jaw spread on a duke 1 1/2. And the Duke jaws aren't that thick. Making them about the same size trap in my opinion.

True. But the MB 550 is wider across. AND a much more reliable trap than a 1 &1/2 Duke. Know one longlines with a bunch of Dukes But there are several longliners with MB 550s out there. But you are correct in the since of = If he is going to Texas = Why not run a bigger trap? # 3 sized traps would be my choice for Texas = IF starting from scratch.

Yes 550 is much strong built trap. That's why I'd be very interested in the Alpha same width of the 550 with a jaw spread that matches that width better. And same strong base and jaws

You can always build your own. That's how other models of traps got started.

Well one question is he has inside and outside laminated. Which ones should I go with or does it matter. I would assume outside

Swampdust,
The MB 650 must be inside laminated to be legal by size, here in Ohio. That is for the regular jawed traps. The cast jaw 650’s are legal. I have a couple dozen 650’s with a mix of cast jaw and inside lams. They mostly sit in a box. The coyote numbers in my area seem to be down and the fox numbers seem to be way up, and they’re just too hard on fox. I can let a fox out of a MB 550 or a Duke 550 Pro or even a 2 coiled K9 Jr, with very little foot damage. That doesn’t happen with the 650’s. Not for me anyhow. The full sized K9 Extreme is a great coyote specific trap, if you have someone to carry them in for you lol. But again, I don’t set them in areas with fox. I haven’t handled an Alpha but I’m sure they’re great. If you’re gonna buy something “to try” get some of them instead of the 650’s. Or just buy some 550’s Mb or Duke, and be done with it.

If you all haven't held an MB Alpha #3 in your hands you should... And if and when you do 4 coil them if you're a serious coyote and bobcat trapper or ever want to be. No dead spot, adjustable pan tension dogless with 1/2 inch jaw face, 3/16th offset. 1/4 offsets are too wide. Wire levers aren't what there cracked up to be IMHO. I've had big yotes bend them enough to impede jaw closure. After trapping 40 plus in the Alphas both protos and production models I can safely say the pan tension is repeatable. No empty snapped traps except for deer.. A coyote steps inside the jaws there yours...

Common sense catches alot of fur..

GBUS. I have held and set 1 Alpha #3. Friend got 1 dz of them. Its a great trap. No doubt. Better than K9 Extreme in MY opinion. BUT i am not a dogless trap fan. Sorry I just dont like dogless as much. The MJ 600 Sterling is the perfect trap for ME. I also like wire levers. They come threw red clay here very well I dont like nuts and bolts for pan tension on traps. IF i can go with a Pit Pan. I will do it every time. To me = Take a MB 550. Give it MB 650 size cast jaws. 6 inch inside spread. Wire levers and a MB 550 style stainless steel dog and pan and that what I want in a 4 coil trap. I quess I can keep dreaming LOL!!
