Looking for recommendation for northern bobcat noose size and heights above ground/snow level.

Thanks

Well you are limited to a 12" loop and You can't set any lower then 6" from a hard packed surface. And no higher then 12" above a hard packed surface.

I would go with a 12" loop and as high as the legal height of 12" from the bottom of the loop.

And since your limited to NO entanglement your going to be setting open areas. So a travailing bob cat will have It's head up and not ducking under stuff so a larger loop would be the way to go. And a larger loop Is less noticeable then a smaller loop.

I agree with Rick on the loop size and height, a larger loop set further off the ground will risk the chance of the bobcat to try jumping through the loop with a possible hip catch at best or a complete miss .

The other reason for a smaller loop is here we've got Mtn lions so a smaller loop set a bit lower greatly reduces catching them or any other non target animal.

If your forced to snare in more open with no entanglement go bigger 9" loop 9 to 10" off the ground /surface you might get some hip caught use a fast snare Allan makes some really good one's bobcat only I would use 1/16" 7x7 8' deathblows I switched to 5/64 7x7 had a few coyotes chew out of 1/16" so far none from the 5/64's,good luck.

Thank you gentlemen for your all your opinions and suggestions. I've read Rick Faler's book "Cable Restraints: The Art of Live-Catch Snares". In it he talks about different size noose and heights for fox vs coyote; but, I don't recall any discussion in regard to bobcat.

This question isn't for myself, but for my son (his first year trapping and he bagged a bobcat tag ... oh his luck.) With our resent snows, he is discovered the meaning of 'setting on sign'. During the season, I've shown him a couple of general sets and promising locations on his small line, and talked him thru a blind snow set or two. He showed up yesterday with the standard " hey dad, do you have any CRs ready to go". Gave him a dozen CRs and the short course refresher on using them. I just couldn't give him any advise on noose and heights as I never got to use CRs fot bobcat. Hence the question here for those more knowledgeable than I.

CR trapping Is a bit restrictive but It's all we have. So we have to play the cards were dealt.

12 inch loop and most Bobcats will just walk right on through. Might hip catch some. Not good.

If I’m trying on purpose to snare cats I’d go 8” up 8” loop. With that being said I snare a good number of most exclusively Toms in my coyote snares. Running 10 x 10 or 12x 12 if not much deer sign.

Q ) You're not suggestion to use a 12 inch loop on a bobcat. . . are you ?
eek

Oh honey, you'll MISS far more bobcats than ever catch, doing that !
That is NOT good advice !

Right answer !
And if you don't use proper blocking, regardless of the size loop, a 'cat will 'chin roll' your loop and keep on, keepin' on !
Trust me on that one !
