Beavers are taking down trees on our neighbors property. They love the crepe myrtles. I don’t have access to the River they are coming from, but the path where limbs are dragged is obvious. Is the best option foothold traps at the base of the trees? Use a lure too? Any ideas are welcomed.

Snares in the trails if legal is your best option.

Snares not legal in SC unless in water. Unfortunately.

If you have deep enough water for a positive drowner, set the foothold in the water where the beaver is coming out of the water near the shoreline.

Just seen where you dont have acess to the water-disregard.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Never trapped any water critter in my life, but I do remember reading if you trap near a tree, don’t anchor to that tree or any within reach. Apparently beavers get ticked and chew when caught live. Read about a beaver getting away after if chewed the tree down, lol.

If conibears are legal, you could target them with the largest legal land set size. I have a pond I trap every year and get a couple beavers on a well beaten trail where the cross under a fence jumping between the river and the pond. I set 220's at that point. Not the ideal way to get it done, but works well enough with clean hits if you can funnel them in well enough.

Are you asking if an option would be to set the traps on dry land at the base of the crepe myrtles? Or, is there water near the crepe myrtles where you would set the trap? Personally, I would not think setting a trap on dry land for a beaver, without the conditions to drown said beaver, would result in a very satisfactory outcome. However, others may feel differently.

I think ground foothold sets near the crepe myrtles are my only option. Don’t have the option of setting on the river they are coming up from. Conibears and snares illegal unless in water in SC. We’ll see how this goes.

Caught my first 2 beaver in a #2 Duke set at the trees they were chewing on. I know that is not the proper way but I had no idea how to trap beaver at the time. Eric [Linked Image]

If you do try to foothold one, I would use the biggest foothold you can legally set on land that is laminated and with fairly high pan tension so you can bury the front leg as deep as you can.

Another option if you can find one is to heavily block down, preferably find a natural blockage, the trail and set a double doored cage trap in the trail.

Thanks SniperB for the input. I did all those things mentioned in your first paragraph. Pan tension is between 4 and 5 pounds and jaw is laminated. Decided to try footholds first as I already own them and don’t have to buy anything new.

That’s one way to not have to play in the water.

Not yet. Had to pull traps due to travel and put back in yesterday. Will keep you posted. Beaver is still active on the crepe myrtles.

I know you posted that snares are illegal, are cable restraints legal? Sometimes it can be the wording, my beaver snares are basically CRs anyway...just curious.

I’ll have to check. In what I’ve read online, in SC, snares and conibears illegal unless in water. I’ll check on cable restraints to see if considered snare. Thanks for idea.
