Caught coyotes in just about everything from 1 1/2 to 4.5 they all work but big traps on ranch in Texas where looking at them in 24 hrs on a control job. If it gets you out there faster , seems the name of the game ... in frozen ground extended checks I would pick a trap for that also.
Spring time calving time I use a different trap than I use for fur trapping.

I've seen that video and I have a mighty hard time believing an animal will have less foot damage from a beaver trap than from a number 2. Reckon how a CDR would treat a grey fox? I think he's talking out of his rear. No way I would set a trap that big on land here even if it was legal.
In one of his videos he talks about how the trap needs to be behind the dirt hole and then he shows night videos of coyotes approaching from the front, contradicting himself. His catch numbers are way higher than mine but he gives some mighty strange advice on stuff.
I don't know what you were watching but in his Teachers of the Night video's the coyotes spend 80% of the time behind the dirt holes and he spent a lot of time pointing that out. I believe it was because of the camera in those videos and don't believe that was a normal reaction That is why I remember what was happening on that night video. There's been talk that those videos were in a coyote pen. Whether it is true or not, I don't know. That would explain one reason why the coyotes are avoided the front of the hole though.
If it makes a track on this earth , I can catch it.

I run 4 coiled NO BS K9 Xtremes here, frozen ground or not. We've got bigger canines running around than coyotes. Caught everything from red fox to wolves in them. Not going to mess around with a half dozen different trap sizes and setups. It's a free market and everyone can run what they like. Someone may run something different than me, but who am I to criticize what works for THEM? Lots of glass houses get cracked when people start throwing stones.

I worry more about zero temps but different styles of traps will give you different outcomes a stamped closed jaw and and a cast offset under the same conditions will yield different results it’s simple surface area formula.

I'm no pro, but I've caught coyotes in everything from #1.5s to #3s and had minimal damage with all. My opinion is the trap size doesn't have a lot to do with damage, but rather the spring strength and jaw face. I've also seen that I often have more damage with a close jaw traps than with offsets. What do y'all think? I know you have caught coyotes and have a Youtube channel but what I think you should really do is read Boone's post.

Think MB550’s are about as big as we can go. If an MB550 is considered a #2. Don’t think there’s a size limit in water, but definitely on land. I couldn’t imagine having to release 2-3 deer every check. Deer certainly step in more than a few traps but pull their feet right out without damage. Every time.

What do y'all think? When I lived in South Carolina last, I did 4.5 years of live market trapping. In that time I may have caught 400 coyotes. I can say - without question - that closed jaw traps cause LESS damage than an offset jaw. It seems counterproductive until you stop and ponder the difference in lockup position of the trap. Strong springs on a closed jaw trap. Offset jaws have their place, especially where I live now. Different traps, different states, different check laws, and different goals for trapping change the landscape on this subject. What might be good for a guy trapping a few coyotes on 24 hour checks may not be good for a guy protecting lambs on extended checks. It’s tough to compare apples to oranges.

5.5” to 7.5” traps for my line. 24hr check so foot damage is minimized. Foxes are very rare where I trap.

You guys are funny.
I’m pretty sure ol’ Locklear has trapped more cats and yotes than most of you have seen. He uses big traps in Texas on deprivation jobs. Why not use them there. Why not have all the advantages you can get?
Nothing wrong with big traps used in the right areas. So you think a CDR will do less damage to feet than a #2? That was the original topic of this thread.

Nothing wrong with big traps used in the right areas. And you know this how? You may not be aware of it but there are a lot of fur takers on this forum. A good many do not have anything to sell such ad DVDs, lures, baits, instructions, etc. Not having anything to sell, these guys do not show catch pictures. Not to take anything away from Clint, but your statement is unfounded, unlikely in many cases, and impossible to prove. Just saying. Mac

I find this discussion to be like like trap check times , it seem to me if a guy is under a 24 hr. Check time they think everyone else should too. Well I will agree with Boone on mud and a big trap but a big trap and a drag which I see Clint locklear use that changes things. And south texas looks like more sand than dirt or mud. Myself if they work they work. Not everyone has got the same conditions. You will find most of this stuff is about not liking the guy and not the trap. Imo Boone point was to get big trap buried in the conditions he has not that he was against big traps . But like he also said big trap in mud is a bad idea. Once again conditions. Imo Red

Worked in texas a long time didnt see many cdrs used in the sheep or cattle for that matter on coyotes or lions hel most of us used what we got i did see 4 nh and lpcs used right along with 3ns three newhouse and 550s Ive held cows in 2 montgomery round jaws and up to 8 lpc You can get a big cow out of a 3n quicker then a 4 newhouse lpc or a 8 lpc i can promise you that especialy by yourself and not on horsback You can catch deer calves sheep antelope in a #2 or a 3 longdpring sized trap which is simular to a 1.75 and hold it just fine whether you need it or not
Ive used just about any size intentionaly and not I got to agree with boonie but i dont have the snow he does or the freezes but i got and hsve had lots of rock and its just easier to bed a smaller trap and more streamlined. I go down the road in the sandhills and ill use anything under 6.5 inches i cant say i use one trap specificaly but in rock clay or caliche i prefer smaller
As far as foot damage and larger or smaller traps offset or not I can say that the more weight the bigger size theres going to be a diffrence especially on a 24 36 48 or 72 hr check I prefer offset jaws but ive had to use them in texas nm are they better i dunno havent used many closed jaws and just am used to offsetting per regulations in nm where i started
Im not knocking big pans but ive not been impressed personally and dont feel i need them
There i said it....
