If I am taking a trip to Alaska through Canada, what are the rules for carrying some personal protection?
Can a hand gun or long gun be carried through? If I travel that far, I wish to be safe.

Short answer - Long gun as long as it is not classified as restricted or prohib you can carry through with appropriate paperwork Handgun - ain't gonna happen, even to carry through.
Firearms for personal protection is not a thing here (I disagree with this) although you are allowed to defend yourself with reasonable/equal force to an attack. In other words, if you happened to have a rifle at the ready, or accessible (and were following all legal storage/possession rules at the time) you would be OK to use it in defense of life IF it was a reasonable response to the amount of threat/force you were subject to. You have to be very careful to NEVER characterize any "weapon" including a pocket knife as having been carried for personal defense as it will be interpreted legally as "you were looking for trouble" in essence.
Lots of us that disagree with this approach but it is the law of the land here and there is a literal ocean of liberal/left thinkers in this country versus a single droplet of self sufficiency/personal responsibility types in this country. (I know that you likely wanted a straight answer here, which I hope I gave you above... but being as how we're on the internet, I assume somebody will turn it political so I am end running the discussion LOL)
Just happy to be here.

Thanks guys. Maybe just put my truck on a boat at Vancouver,Washington and ride up. Then get off at Alaska. Reverse when coming home.
As much as I liked fishing in Canada, I don't think to go back there.

Dirt: One reason why I wanted to carry while in Alaska. I would be going to Visit my Cousin in Wasilla. Then go out to view the countryside.

you might look into shipping your gun to AK where you plan to spend your first night and arrange to pick it up

You could always hit a gun store or walmart when you arrive in AK... I assume you could pick up a Hi Point and a box of ammo for less than $200 in the USA LOL. Does Alaska have a "cool down" law, or can you just buy the gun and walk out of the store?
Just happy to be here.

I am not sure you can get into Canada without your shots being up to date. I would just take the ferry. All you would miss is over priced fuel and a bunch of frost heaves.

Does Alaska have a "cool down" law, or can you just buy the gun and walk out of the store? then you have an untested un proven gun you haven't practiced with better to ship a known good gun with a brand of ammo that your FFL in AK can sell you and hold with your gun

Having survived almost 40 years here without carrying a gun for protection, you may survive.

Good luck with anything AMHS. They probably won't have a summer schedule out until it is summer. I worked there for a long time and it was embarrassing being associated with some of the incompetence. Online scheduling, recorded messages, bad info you name it. As an employee with inside information, I had a hard time trying to figure out when to show up for work. A round trip will set you back a few grand. I would check, but I am sure their online reservations is probably not working. If the rental car market eases up, I would consider flying up and renting a car. The trip up by ship is pretty awesome though.
