Do you treat the traps with something before installing them on the fox?

I like to wax my snares when I am doing traps, but at times I have set them for fox or cats with no treatment.
I always wax my wolf snares.

Here we have registered trplined where no one else can trap,so I leave a lot of my snares out in the bush on my lines in the offseason(closed and hung on a stub). Some of my snare jackpots only get activated every second or 3rd season on a rotation. When i wax snares I throw them in with my traps, when blacking and waxing.I have the wax very hot hotter than 212f,when the snares come out of the dye and into the wax,all the water sizzles out in the wax and the wax gets inside the snare between the strands. This acts to lubricate the snare but more important it protects them from deterioration when left out on the line in the off season(closed of course).
Wax also stiffens a 7x7 snare.
Waxed snares are less prone to freezing in fall when wet weather turns to freeze at night.
Right after waxing I store snares in totes with evergreen branches, and the wax picks up the scent of the bush.

But like I said,I have set untreated snares and caught fur.

An unwaxed snare if left out will deteriorate fairly quickly, especially if it has been boiled in baking soda. The strands get brittle and break easily,You can test this by bending the wire back and forth a few times right at the ferrel. If you see a couple strands separate, toss the snare its gone rotten.

No it is a jackpot setup, the only packed trail is the trail in and out.
The fox was caught on a rabbit run going to the bait.

I sometimes set a snare on my trail in to a marten box but not to a big bait.

Which is the exact reason I stop boiling snare cable over two decades ago.

There isn't any reason to ever boil cable. If you have oil on the outside of your cable, you need to find a new supplier !
I use dry cable, which has ZERO oil and stain it using the tannic acid from leaves which will make it the exact color of (fallen ) leaf , itself.
Those that still boil cable , either have the wrong cable or are behind the times, IMO.
Tossing snares that rust from the inside out after one year ? Well, isn't that a waste of time and money ?
Would be for me.

Mind explaining how you go about doing the tanic acid thing ? Sounds interesting . I remember seeing someone talk about tossing could of cable under leaf piles for a few weeks but that's about all I know on the subject

I don’t boil any cables either, zero, but if he’s consistently and successfully snaring large animals (Wolf, lynx, etc) with cable left in the bush for over a year, I think he probably has a system that works.
