SNIPERB brings up a very good point on the muskrat push ups or any points of elevation. I run a few lakes and whenever the rats do a push up the fox and yotes always go over and check it out.
I like to take a bale of hay, I got no deer up here smile and create two different mounds. At each mound I do a modified dirt hole, ie picture the hay as being dirt, and a scent post. 2 traps. Depending on your weather I chip a hole in the ice for the bed line it with hay bed the trap and then cover. A pair of heavy duty scissors helps create the fine stuff smile
Some very good points on this thread for anchoring in ice. I drill a pilot hole and sink a rebar stake.
The one thing I will caution you with is make sure you have good pan tension. Ravens/crows also like checking those spots out.
If your snow is the dry type powder your traps will fire up to 4 inches. If it is that heavy wet junk up to 2 inches.
Good luck and hope to see some tight chains!

Thank you everyone!

30+ mph winds today so I didn’t set. Tomorrow I hope to show you the layout! The yotes are coming in!

Hey 20scout, I take offense to that! grin

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

If you can find some active mouse nests, they work great as an attraction in a hay or straw sets .

Well I set a few traps today in the -19 windchill… it’s going to be a learning experience. The snow we have is so deep that even on the middle of the pond I had to dig down 12” to get to the ice to anchor the trap. I can’t hardly set in a big crater can i? I tried a haybale set, a pee post set and a “snowhole” set… we’ll see if anything is there in the morning?

On a side note, I did have a yote at the bait this morning. I put my coffee down and let the 6.5 do a little talking. 325 yards. That’s one less to trap I guess.

Tough keeping steel working in this snow but nice to see you have a back up plan!

Lots of pictures on file, but then, Trapperman. com doesn't do Photobucket anymore. . .
Worst luck !

If you know it's going to stay cold you can chip a hole in the ice and put your chain ii it and pour hot water in it to freeze your chain in for your staking system.

Its photobuckets problem, they don't allow third party linking anymore unless you pay for it. You can just directly upload pictures now.

Well, you guys were right about sticking to the cable! Haha.

It was -40 to +40 over the coarse of 10 days. I did my best at a few different sets in the snow and ice but it was tough. I used waxed dirt and wax paper to cover the traps... but after wind and the above freezing temps, I just had exposed paper and blown dirt. The snow had blown or melted off the traps. A lot of work for a few half-assed sets.

Im learning. Thanks for any advice you fellas gave me. Ill be trying again!

Lol. It is a pita to run footholds this time of year. Dealing with the same conditions, not quite as cold though.

I dipped some traps in white paint. Amazing difference in how much less they melt out when set in the snow.

Yup, even tough to keep snares working in this weather. But we will give you credit for trying! Take what you've learned so far this year and see if you can expand on it next season.
