Recreational squirrel trapping is something I’d like to see come to Louisiana. Unfortunately, we’re not there yet

When you guys are talking about colony traps for squirrels, like Vinke said. Do you mean all your squirrels are in a muskrat colony trap alive when you get there? I am sorry, I dont do ADC. I mainly come to this forum to browse. Always cool stuff. I dont think you should be able to relocate them. They're going to eat a hole in someone's house, but I understand being PC and getting them away homeowners and nosey neighbors.

Gray squirrel> Adult female and two young
[Linked Image]

Top cage adult female; bottom cage three young. The squirrels were using the air conditioner chase to gain entry to the attic.

Four flying squirrels.

Female gray squirrel-was entering attic through powered attic vent. Vent was inoperable.

LaTrapper, what brand of cage is that?

My setup typically looks something like this -

Fixed them for you Bob lol. They were all correct in my library just not when I uploaded. Just need to rotate your computer a bit and it makes it easier grin

JoeyHalk-
That large trap was a Tomahawk M-80. They are no longer made so I copied the design and made some in my garage. I have only made about a dozen of the large ones, they measure 8" X 8" X 24".The entrances are 3" X3". However, they can be made any size you desire. The size I usually used for flying squirrels is 6" X 6" X10" and only has one entrance. Nose cones were used on almost all setups.

Why can't they get out of the colony traps? I understand muskrat because they are under water. The squirrels never lift it up or escape when a new squirrel arrives? I have never trapped a squirrel. Is it a regular colony trap with one side closed off with wire?

It’s possible that they could get back in while another comes
Out but it doesn’t happen real often, there is also a lip extended
At the bottom of the door unlike most colony traps that keeps them from lifting it with there nose.

I've heard of people using them for rabbits.

Sometimes they figure out how to open it but not often. I wouldn’t really say they figure it out, they just get lucky.

Most of mine have two doors. The first door catches them. They go further into the cage and the second door holds them in a different part of the cage and allows other squirrels in. Best seen in the photo with the trap below the satellite dish.

As NE said they have a lip at the bottom. The squirrel is typically standing on it preventing itself from being able to lift the door.

Some cages, like the ones from Viking have a little roll of wire at the bottom of the lip that prevents them from being able to get their nose under the door and open it. I wish they all had this.

I’ve only seen it once where I know the squirrel learned to open the door. I had traps set on gables on each side of the house and the customer sent me pictures of the squirrel in both cages. Going back and forth all day but not able to get out of the house. Of course by the time I got there it wasn’t in either cage so I set tube traps in the attic and caught it that way.

See the bottom cage of squirrels. Most of my colony traps have a nose cone one way door that is separate from the holding cage. They slide together in seconds. Just remove the holding cage with the squirrels in it and throw another one on the still attached nose cone. No unscrewing of the one way. A stop like this can be done in probably two minutes including getting the ladder out lol.
