It’s happened in my wall tent in the middle of winter also! Especially after a cold snap.

I love the smell of burning spruce---I love the sound of a spring time goose---I love the feel of 40 below---from my trapline I will never go!

Man, that is some insane wolf action on that stretch of trail! That will definitely get a guy's blood pressure going! Hope you nail that blue, I'd like to see it. You or a buddy must have seen the pack from the air?

I caught a big (97lb) old female last year in a snare, the pack worked her over pretty good. She had bite marks all over the place. I think I scared the pack off when I drove up. She was still kinda warm, so not dead long. Makes me wonder if they would have eaten her if I wouldn't have arrived when I did. They can be pretty savage creatures.

Good afternoon trappers. Came in yesterday off of the line with a happy client and frustrated trapper. Got a bunch more snow and the temps definitely warmed up. Wait a minute... Let me back up. A friend brought in wolf #3 the other evening. This is the wolf that I lost a couple weeks ago in the bait on the Tanana. It had chewed out of one of my snares. This was one of my good snares too, 3/32" 1x19 with a triggered Seneker kill spring. Never had lost anything in this set up but now I understand why. I'd put a couple traps out on some tracks and evidently one of them worked.

Tested Stacey's sewing abilities and she passed with flying colors. [Linked Image]

Client came in from Florida on Saturday and we headed out on Sunday morn. Got some snow so the trail was a little rough. He got off the trail 4 times before we hit the creek. Pretty big ol boy and deep snow didn't get along very well. [Linked Image] The Tanana pack came back in and missed on one post somehow... [Linked Image]

There was a big tom lynx on my beaver carcass at the cabin when I pulled up. Tim didn't see it but I knew he'd be back. We set a 330 in a plywood cubby that I had laying around before we went out checking line. Didn't see much sign with all the snow but lucky enough to pick up another wolf in a pee post upriver. So things are going pretty well up to now, feeling pretty good and then......

On up the trail, Tim runs the Expedition Sport into a tree. [Linked Image]
Not sure the extent of the damage yet but he said he'd cover it. He was happy with the trip so far and admitted he just wasn't in shape for such an adventure. I jumped on the broke sled and let him ride my new Expeditioin. When we got back to the cabin or I'll say,, when I got back to the cabin, the 330 was tripped and out of the box. Swing and a miss and also no Tim... Reset the trap, cut the sled loose and ran back up the trail a 1/2 mile to find Tim walking and my new Expedition on its side. Frustration override ........ How the... What the...I just don't understand. Anyway, back to the cabin, drop Tim off and go for a drive to cool off. [Linked Image]

Came back to the cabin calmed down and shortly there after...

33# fat greedy tom
[Linked Image]
Tim spent he next day grounded at the cabin while I went out and checked some more line. Found this moose by one of my cabins. Looked like a poor placed hunter's shot I'd guess. [Linked Image]
Pee Post Pass had a bit of snow [Linked Image]
Hauled out the Expedition on the flat sled and told Tim to " hang on, try to keep up and no passing". [Linked Image]
Took us 6 hours to get into the cabin and 3 1/2 hours to get out. Had some drifts to contend with on the way out other that that pretty good run. Tripped the all the marten on the way out too.

NOW that was quite the trip JR! Good write up as usual. Good thing it wasn’t the usual February weather!

Glad you guys had a good run! Sucks about the sled but it is what it is. Hoping for a quick and easy fix for you. That is pretty wild with the lynx, big boy there! Congrats on the wolf and I hope there are a few more waiting for you when you make your next run! Be safe out there and thank you for sharing your adventure!

Good for you for having the patience to deal with a good-natured greenhorn and share your special place. I’m sure it’s frustrating but If he knew how to do all the things you do then he wouldn’t have asked you for help. By sharing you have increased th number of people who value the place and the lifestyle.

Aren't clients fun? Doesn't matter how many times you tell them to ride standing up and lean, they nod their head and say, "ok". . . and sit down before they go 10 feet. These new sleds are a lot better, when we used to put clients on the old style Tundras or the 440 LT; well there has been more than one time I've had to take a ride to cool down.

You probably made some memories for the guy, it's a long way from Florida! Hope your machines get back on their tracks ok. Cool deal on your yard cat.

Nice you caught up with that wolf and solved the mystery. I've got a couple out there missing some digits, would love to catch up to them one of these days. I saw you are still slumming some 750s, looks like it worked out that time. Do you use them in theft prone areas? Or just when you are out of 9s?

Hope the rest of your season goes well.

Nate I still run around 3 dozen MB750's. I've said many times that I use them where I am targeting wolves but hugh chance of catching coyote, lynx or wolverine also. The AK#9 is a terrible trap for everything other than wolves, mountain lion or bears. I've heard a lot of guys say they like them for wolverine but the jaw is too high and they can fit their whole head under the jaw and chew.

I'd set that MB750 in a track set for that wolf and it worked but as you can see, barely. There was about 7" of fresh powder snow. I do like the trap just not as reliable to leave unattended. If you have to clean off your sets after every little snow, you will probably scare most wolves or coyotes off. IMHO... This year is out of the normal for me with all this snow and think most of my #9's are out of commission too. I just hate stomping a trail over to them to clean them off and re-bed them up higher. Seems like I'd done this before and had a big wind come up and left about 30 or 40 #9's exposed...

Clients; gotta love'm. They are often having the time of their lives, while at the same time you are pulling your hair out. You just grin and bear it, and be thankful that you are helping them live their dream.

You'll have to forgive my videos. They cut out the sound because of a song on the radio. Evidently I don't have the right to share the videos with the radio playing in the background.
