On Saginaw Bay in the winter I put down a tip up with a heavy sinker on bottom. A tip up is a handsfree fishing rig, it has a flag that pops up when a fish bites. With it sitting on bottom with a heavy sinker, if the ice moves a fraction the flag goes up!! Well boys it's time to beat cheeks and head for shore!!! you're only allowed so many sunrises... I aim to see every one of them!

They would put the line down and put the jug with the other end tied to it out from the hole and when the walleye pulled the jug to the hole, the jug woulf stop and the fish would hook itself.
