… surprised how quickly y’all are dismissing the chance that it’s Mark McGwire getting hopped up on steroids and traveling the country beating trees with a baseball bat

If I was 5' tall and 110 #'s I'd for real carry a 18" barreled 12 GA. Shotgun with a long sling in front. loaded with copper plated Buckshot (plug out) I'd have a good dog too, like You.
I want to Believe in Squatch's I'm a skeptical believer put it that way
There's nothing Else animal wise in the woods that can make those sounds.
So. no joking from me, just I don't have a guess or Answer. Thanks for the tip, I should start carrying something! Love my good dog. I'm not a believer, so I'm still leaning towards a moose being weird. But that wouldn't explain it for the OP.

Only time I have heard any thing close to that in the woods is in winter when the temps have held well below zero for and extended period.Trees can make a LOUD popping sound from the sap freezing and expanding creating what they call a "Frost Crack".And yes they are as loud or even louder than someone smacking a tree with a ball bat. Interesting, I haven't heard that yet in cold temps, but it will be great to know if and when I do.

The PA guys make the assumption that if they have a low chance of being accosted by a wild animal than so do you in a different part of the country. LMBO.
Remind me was it also a PA guy who told Cathryn that all she was hearin was a predator trying to scare prey animals? Say WHAT? The predator must be fasting LOL (and have hands to pick up sticks and hit trees).
The wisdom (and any type of logical thinking)on this thread is somewhat underwhelming. IDK, my daughter lived in Maine for years and spent a lot of time in the woods. She's a small person too. I worry more about her working in the PA mountains because of rattlers. Not sure what is in Maine that isn't here except moose. The only time I was worried about a wild animal was being charged by a coon ( not in a trap)..I was glad to be carrying a revolver. I still think that one had to be rabid, as I have killed plenty with distemper and they never were that aggressive.
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

I agree coon with distemper are prolly to dizzy to be very aggressive and rabies would be a better fit.
I am knee deep in rattlers around here and I guess I am used to them so I think a moose that could stomp a mud hole in ya would be a way bigger concern. Especially for a kid who might be playin on a phone instead of paying attention.

I think people really underestimate the decibel level of a pileated woodpecker hammering on a nearby tree in a still woods.
Just give me one thing, that I can hold on to. To believe in this livin' is just a hard way to go.

I think people really underestimate the decibel level of a pileated woodpecker hammering on a nearby tree in a still woods. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt with the volume. But do they knock exactly three times, about 1.5 seconds apart, and then not do it again for several hours? And then not again for several hours? And then not again for 3 weeks?

I leaning towards an escaped gorilla looking for a mate. I'm glad u made it back safe.i think that's what Savell was alluding to also. … just because it’s your birthday don’t mean you can pretend to know what I’m alluding to… I stated my theory plain as day… a professional baseball player from the 90’s relapsed on steroids and is traveling the country hitting trees with the ol Louisville Slugger!!

Well, multiple people have tried to answer the question, but without an actual recording of the sound, it's all guess work. Anything can happen, but your chance of being attacked by some wild animal is pretty small. On the bright side, you don't even have rattle snakes to worry about.
Let people have thier fun, we all need a laugh now and then. True! We all do. And there are tons of places to have fun, why does it have to be at the expense of people who have serious questions? Hijacking them and then burying the question with "fun" so no one who might actually have an answer can see it? A couple people did genuinely try, and that's why the OP and I addressed those suggestions, but most just threw out random names of wild animals. Who has ever heard a chipmunk that has the volume of a baseball bat against a tree? You can't really get more clear about the sound than the description that both OP and I gave, it's just that no one actually read or believed it. It's just more important for them to "have fun" than for us to get answers to our questions. Hopefully if you ever have a genuine question, other people will make sure you can't get an answer either. But I doubt that would ever happen, because you already seem to know everything there is to know, right? Agreed. What I heard was not a woodpecker ..( and I DO.know.hat one sounda.like.in the distance) Unless you heard what I heard there's no way to explain what it soinds.like.."3 knocks" doesn't do the description juatice. As I've said before I don't know what it was but I have ruled out EVERY sound and noise that I've been told it was...grouse.drummin .NO, wood.pecker NO, timber guy NO The knocks were so deep in tenor you could feel them .like bass on a song played way too loud. Im.not a crackpot..im someone who heard something that has no explanation The people on here making jokes.dont bother me If they heard what I heard they'd be baffled by it to but they wouldn't be brave enough to post the question as to.what it might be for fear someone would think they're nuts. I don't care what they think of me I know I heard something that I can't explain away. Once you've heard it the noise changes you a little because how can you hear something that you absolutely cannot put a source to? I wasn't high or drunk when I heard them..I was pulling weeds out of a strawberry patch for my new neighbor. People can think what they want about me. Im a conservative American who has racked their brain to put an explanation to the noise I heard and have been unsuccessful.
IF IDIOTS GREW ON TREES THIS PLACE WOULD BE AN ORCHARD !

Sounds like the OP and Mainewoods both have shy secret loves. To which if you wish to reciprocate you should knock back three times. If not find something hollow and knock back only twice. Which should mean to your big or small footed friend the answer is you will be a no show. Just in case he can't hear, a side arm never hurts ! Here's ur guys chance to get real proof
