Happy Spring Trappers. Spent 6 days out on the line pulling gear and exploring. The warm weather set up the snow for some great travel. Went into some country I'd never been. Saw lots of moose, a few caribou, 6 ptarmigan and very little wolf sign in 450 miles of travel In all those miles, I only found one dead moose and it was a calf that either starved to death or died of exhaustion. Took a buddy with me that had never been in that country before and he loved it and rode well. [Linked Image]

Crossed over quite a few different passes and went down some valleys I'd never been able to travel. All this snow worked to our advantage for this. [Linked Image]

Had this little red fox in the yard a few times. It was nice enough to let me shoot a few pics early one morning. Still a bit dark at 6 am but did the best with what I had. [Linked Image]

The rivers were still holding pretty fast and travel was great. [Linked Image]

I ended up blowing a belt on the Expedition. Only 4500 miles on it. They just don't make those belts to last anymore wink I may have got it wet a time or two on some water crossings and that is hard on the belts. I put the spare on a we continued on. Closed up the cabins for the season and don't know if I will make another trip. Would like to do one more out and hauls some RR ties out to put under the cabin.

Fantastic pictures as always JR your have talent for sure for capturing images , the fox looks good and should get along with the weasel at the cabin .

I agree on the belts for the sleds even when they brag them up because of all the new improvements they still seem to go bad to soon .

I'm glad to see and hear the trip out there went as well as it did we've got another snow storm heading our way soon .
Stay Safe out there !

Lovely country . Such fun to access views not seen before. That's an advantage of snow build up. Lovely fox. They are always so curious.

Snowing here all day and night . More to come. Love it.

Greetings Trappers. I believe summer is finally upon us. Still have a bit of snow behind the shop where the roof slid on the North side. Rhubarb is coming up fast.
Been trying to get a boat out to a remote cabin for a couple years and finally got that done. I couldn't get it all the way to the lake so had to helicopter it in the last 15 miles. We probably could have cut a trail but we didn't have time with the warming weather. Really neat to cover some new country. [Linked Image]

[Linked Image]
Had air support and Dave shot some the pics of us on the trail. [Linked Image]
Got a couple Elans from a friend. I'd like to restore one for sentimental value. Never messed around with them before but got them both running. Such a simple machine compared to today's equipment. One will get hauled out on the line cabin for a back up machine to save some walking. [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
Bear season is up and running and we got a good one to start the season. He was an old warrior scarred up from head to tail. My buddy's first bear and a good one . [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]
Hard to beat a 9' interior griz with a 26 7/8" skull. May have to go get a black bear myself for some sausage. Have a good one hitting the bait. [Linked Image]
Been working a little iron this spring and hope to get a good work year in. [Linked Image]
Had this little fella on the job site so had to get a few pics. [Linked Image]

Have a safe summer..

Elans are from a much simpler time on the trapline! GREAT machines. But a little difficult for a tall fat man to ride on! I always rode on my knees and steered mostly with "body English!"

That is a fantastic grizzly...

Masek was over at the shop yesterday admiring my collection of Elans which is up to 3 now. He said "you need one more and you'll have 2 sets of snow shoes'. He called the Elan a motorized snow shoe and ya need one for each foot.

I can honestly say my knees are bad now partially from 10 years of trapping on an Elan. Slow and gas hog but would go anywhere and very basic unlike the newer sleds that can go farther faster and not on your knees as much!

I love the smell of burning spruce---I love the sound of a spring time goose---I love the feel of 40 below---from my trapline I will never go!
