For those of you that use bait and lure in a canine bait hole set, which type of lure do you normally place with the set. Gland, call, food or curiosity or a mixture? I usually use coyote gland with the bait if I am trapping coyotes and red fox gland if trapping fox, red or gray.

When I'm using a call lure It goes about 3 feet off the ground and about 6' to 10' from the set.

I like gland lures best.

If you got a good Bait shouldn't need lure .

I feel Lure is for a remake.

Let me sugar coat this

For me if it's down a hole where they have to work to get it and you have the ability to control foot placement so well I want whatever has the very most/strongest reaction I can get. For me it's formulations with a great food base with additives that they want bad enough to dig for. Something that covers all the bases and has the kitchen sink in there too. Some situations might call for a different approach such as trapping in areas of high nontarget populations or shy/cautious coyotes. But for around here that's what I like. Seems to be able to catch 60% of the population. The rest of the population you seem to have to get a little more sneaky about than just a common dirt hole.

It has been my experience when trapping just for coyote any gland lure seems to work. Have used coyote, fox, mink, & weasel gland as change ups on the line. When just fox trapping i use any gland lure but coyote. But all will catch any animal sometimes

Till that day.....

Just put fresh beaver and either coyote or bobcat gland lure at my sets this evening. Hoping something happens before it rots in this 100 degree temps. I’ve caught coyotes on bobcat, fox, and coyote gland lure. I’ve caught bobcats on all three as well. And grey fox on all three as well.

Mostly I put everything down the hole ,I will smear a gland lure on the top of the hole . I just put out some bait holes with dog food and fish oil mix i will scatter it and put some in a hole to get them started, when the trap goes down i will put bait in the hole only. This method has been producing the last couple weeks.

I like a well formulated Bait down the hole or under a big flat rock, then I like to put a Bone in the dirt hole for eye appeal. Finish off the set with Gland lure/Urine. Make another sent post set near by and you will catch some of the spooky coyote's. For the baits I like to have at least 3 different flavor's to work with.

I just use my bait down the hole and a shot of quality urine on the backing. If I used a lure it would go in the hole too.

I’m new to trapping. Last year was my first season and I was able to get some red fox but I was targeting coyote. I used some bait which was just deer meat trimmings from a couple doe I shot last year and a bottle of lure.

Had a few I stances where the hole was dug out and the bait gone but the trap wasn’t sprung. Had pics of one set from a game camera where a coyote walked a couple feet right past my set and didn’t even bother with it.

This year I’m gonna try again. It’s a lot of fun and I have two dozen traps to set out instead of the eight I started with last year.

Keep at it and you'll get them eventually. Make sure you dig your hole deep enough as fox and coyotes have long noses and can get your bait w/o any problems if it's too shallow. If it's skunk, too much pan tension may be preventing your trap going off.

Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

A very good trapper from PA that I know uses deer liver for bait.

Similar process for bobcat trapping?
