I went to PA this weekend and my nephew said he parked his logging equipment, can't make $$ with $7/diesel. He said two other loggers have followed suit and trucking is a real issue. His hauler went from $350/load to $500/$600 a load. If you buy log length firewood, better get it now.

I have a friend that got out of logging (self-employed) for the same reason.

Eh...wot?

I haven't scaled a log truck since last wed. I just ordered off road for tommorow delivery. I expected a slowdown over the holiday. We were shut down on some federal/state timber sales because of oak wilt. That restriction lifts this month. Funny part is I only buy plantation red pine, not oak.

I sold my equipment this spring, sick of busting my arse in the woods only to see lower profit margins year after year. Last loads of wood I had hauled last month the trucking took over 40% of the money on the pulpwood.

High fuel prices, high repair costs, just finding parts to repair with, cost of tires and routine maintenance, trucking shortages, dependable labor shortage, all taking a toll on logging right now.

Same here in NY, many lumber mills unable to hire logging contractors to harvest timber sales. The big logging outfits with flail chipharvesters feeding paper quality chips to International Papers mill in Ticonderoga ,NY are still operating, but fuel costs have doubled since last year.
I think firewood logs are going to be in short supply in the not to distant future ?

I mill fence posts, also have size sorting equipment. This is first year I'm getting pulp grade mixed into my post wood. We have a grinding yard for mulch products. This mixing is to benefit the producers in the woods, not me. I have to add 3-4 men to sorting operation as the "eyes" for logs sized right for posts but defective. Sorter uses lazer for size, but cannot see the defects.

Could be a mill or logger that purchased the timber and has to cut or lose the job.

So how much could I save buying fence post directly and how many fit on a semi load.

Before you do that, get a load of hedge posts. Not sure if you have them there.
They’ll still be there when your grandkids are old folks.

Walnut is being cut at a heckuva clip around these parts.
I can’t believe they keep finding it to cut.

I agree with clay on using hedge post. I won’t use boughten post, they will just rot off and I will have to build fence again

I build fence with the thought In mind that it will be my son or grand sons problem to fix because it should outlast me [Linked Image]

Cutting on share is where the logger are losing fuel way too high and owner want more tan 3o percent for their timber.

I lost my job this spring . The company I worked for downsized tremendously and are just doing dirt work. 2 brothers no employees. I took the leap out of the woods bussiness and im now working in a rail car repair facility. Figured I should gain some new skills now before there really isn't anything left.

Landowners were selling their timber for 30% or less?

Sorry to hear you logging guys are contemplating
hanging it up.

Who will manage our country's forest when you
guys are gone.

We can't rely on the state to properly manage the forests.

High fuel prices will ruin an economy quicker than anything else. My opinion.

so, when Obama said if we implemented his policies that "electricity prices would necessarily skyrocket", he was trying to help the US economy?

Biden is IMPLEMENTING Obama's policies.
