Hey trappers, I watched a video yesterday, and the trapper said " if your urine is dark in color and not clear, throw it out! ". Is there any truth to this? I would imagine that would depend on if there is gland mixed in it?

I'll say no. It will darken with age.
LB12, I've been taking wild caught urine (from Fox & Coyote I caught) for decades.
Wild caught canine urine color varies throughout the season from yellow to apple cider color. 4 or 5 of colors through the season.

Most all urine will darken in color with time based upon storage temps and how much if any light exposure it has. As soon as urine hits the open air environment it will begin to breakdown and change to a darker shade. If you freeze your urine it will hold its light color longer.

Color can and will vary greatly. That has no bearing upon the quality of the urine. Diet and time of year greatly influence the color and how fast it will change like Hern stated.

All genuine meat fed authentic animal urines will darken, some more then others. Caramel color is the most common shade in my experience. As long as the urine is clean it will hold its quality and last indefinitely as has been stated previously many times. The ammonia type odor is a natural by product of aging urine.

I've been collecting my own for a couple years now. The stuff I bought that doesn't get dark with time is the stuff I through out.

He just had me wondering, because I have some really old urine like 10+ years old that to my nose smells like it should, and is very dark in color. So then I start second guessing my self that maybe I don't know what it should be smelling like. I recently bought some urine at the state Rondi and it all has a some color to it. Appreciate the replies!!

Some info on the internet can be helpful while some can be misleading. Some info may come from someone with very little experience, no one knows these days.. Some comes from an internet pro that repeats what they hear.

I hardly use the stuff but i do bring it out occasionally (i have bad luck 2kth the bottles, no matter who i get it from they always leak from cracks/holes in the bottle. Bobcat urine is the worst to have leak).

If it doesn't smell like sewage you're good. Even if its sewage id bet some coyote or neighbors dog will roll on it... I remember dumping out some bait that went bad and the neighbors dog came by and had the time of it's life rolling on it.

I can't say I have bad experience with urine other than the occasional deer wanting to mess with a set when I use it.

Not sure if this guy was selling urine or what but like I said previously just made me second guess my self. Everything smells like it should to my nose, and even the really old bottle of urine smells fine just a little stronger smelling of ammonia compared to the fresher stuff.

I will respectfully and admittedly call bs on the comment if it doesn't smell like sewage you're good. The artificial and watered down stuff is the problem with a large amount of what's on the market these days and it doesn't rotten with a sewage smell. At least the stuff that gets a sewage smell was probably really just miss handled unlike the stuff the guy sells that knows it's artificial or been cut. Also a lot 9f people think just because it has an ammonia smell it's real but it doesn't take a genius to at a little ammonia to low quality pee to impress the buyer.

Lot of that depends on your end use of the urine. You can use anything out there, just gotta know what it is, what it does and how to take advantage.

Like guys that complain about a bait or lure that causes rolling. Its not bad because it causes rolling. The user just doesnt know how to take advantage of the fact or was sloppy with handling of the stuff over the set.

If your urine is dark, it generally means you are dehydrated. I'd suggest you drink more water and it should clear up. You're welcome.

Anybody send out urine for analysis to see what species urine is actually in it?
I dont use urine often,but I get my own from bladder and also picking it up from the snow.
No shortage of that yellow snow on the trapline.

I see it coming out so I am sure of the species, no analysis needed.

What I have learned about fake urine Is It will turn clear and have no smell after about a year In my dark shed.

Get yourself a clean glass jar with a tight sealing lid.

Pee in it until it's 3/4 full and seal it.

Set it on a shelf and take a look at it every day for the next 30 days

You'll be amazed at what you see

Same will go for animal urine (only you didn't pee through a screen contaminated with (possible) hair, flesh, blood splatters bone and feces )

I've a bottle of that stuff setting around. Don't know why I don't throw it away, I certainly don't use it. Never caught anything on it or even had anything show much interest, even when it was new.
