Occasionally I'll see a coyote or beaver in a trap! That's about the oddest thing I encounter, lol.

I will start of with this 1. Two jobs back. Set out line. Coyote den close to property line im working. Day 1 = catch pup. Mom tracks all around. Well dang ! Not a good start. Use little coyotes paws at set catch mom. Then catch dad few days latter. Then = the baby siter = takes remanding pups on a trip moves den or whatever. So a few days latter her sign and lots of pup sign 1 mile away. On them again Pick off all pups but 1 and her! See moves again. I find them again. Run ing close to end of 15 days. Like chasing last 2 coyotes on property. 2 biologist and 1 helper are helping me look for tracks. No luck. Then I find them. Set a feq good sets Next day. Come rounds a corner at set see some thing odd in the sand. I dont get out of truck normally and monkey with sets. Don’t believe in it. BUT I had to get out. Small tract going to set = then they look like they twist = in sand. Then gone. Step in to grass same thing but large coyote ? And I find small tuff of hair ?? Well i put it all together and just laugh ! Pup was going foe set = baby sitter grabbed pup. Save pup and moved along ! Next day logging crew moved in. My time was up. Good game. See you 2 coyotes next trip! LOL!

Had a small high fence job. 320 acres. 1 coyote left. Killed axis deer before i got their. Fun part = The Story = trapper before me = their 1 month. Caught 1 coyote + said he added more traps everyday. Had a total of 61 traps on 320 acres. OH NO I said. Gave them a daily price that was BAD high. Honestly did not want job. Guy never blinked. Wish I had asj for more !! LoL! Day 1 = landowner ride with me I set 12 traps. Aint you going to set more he said? No sir. That night previously trapper calls me. Says = I done this for years that coyote cant be caught. I was polite but thought = Challenge Excepted !! Worried a little tha he used = Gumbo and SWE lurw from Ogorman’s I like Gumbo had 10 Lucero lured sets out and 2 with Gumbo. Funny part= day 2. Running this place. Come to a set. JL 1 Grawes urine. Coyote toed around it = pattern miss. So close. Stepped everywhere but on pan. Ok no big deal. Come to set with Gumbo = Lookes like this coyote did a = cart wheel at set!! Kick up whitesand like a race horse leaving. In 35 years of trapping I have seen alot BUT this joker kick up sand like someone was shooting at him. LoL! Ok for next 2 days. I cant find his track in 320 acre high fence any where. No holes digging out ! Did he fly away. Its day 5. Im getting worried. Go round the curve. Their he is old 3 toes. Funny part is latter after I caught him. Landowner tells me = last trapper had him caught but pulled up on him and he got out! Thanks that helped. Even funnier is = the other trapper 1 week latter call to congratulate me. The text me about getting some lessons next time i was down that way. LOL!

And he LOVED to stomp on OR poop on my MJ 600s This was a while back. So I come over a hill see him close to a = roped of set. I get closer. Is that a coyote tail buried in the dirt???? OK who is messing with me?? Get closer. Bull Broke rope up spot. Killed coyote some how. And stomped him into the ground. Hard to believe but = only thing showing was his tail!! Had to get my pick out!!! LOL!

Do you ever trap a place where you can’t find tracks due to conditions of the land? If so, where do you set then? And how many sets say on the same acreage as your above post.

Wanna Be. Thats another tuff question. But here goes ! How many sets per acre do I set ? Depends on what im seeing ? 1200 acres of cutover with roads like a checker board may get lots of sets. 1200 acres of hardwood’s and big pines may get very few. Here on 1200 I have just took 13 in 14 days. A few months back. So I am about playes out here. New coming here =6 would be a monster #. BUT owners don’t care. Biologist saw a coyote on camera. He has to go!! About 35 sets. Some are 2 sets. Some have 0 sign but I caught there before so They get a trap NEXT = No tracks No poop No scratch marks = wherw do I set ???? Good question? IF i have caught coyotes their the year before I set traps in those locations first Tracks or not. A good spot is a good spot. Trapped on large places for 10 years plus = and allways. Catch coyotes in same spots. New coyotes. Good locations. Next. I look at topo. I look at neighbors land. On map. IF a new coyote was coming here where would he come from? Tips help. Neighbor has a watermelon patch close. Ok get on property line and set a few. Spot that narrows down on feild edges? Set a few. Places that have gates? Set afew. Just placea coyotes may want to go. Yall now the drill. In the end. It comea down to experence. Aftee 35 yeara of catching coyotes. My gut instincts say = Set a trap here! So I do

I'll vouch for the sand where steeltraps is setting. That's where Dad was born and grew up. It just doesn't sod over unless you purposely plant it to do so.
I'm envious as everything is sod or asphalt here. No tracks to speak of, but I look anyway. I'll second the topo and aerial photos plus sizing up the neighbors properties. Sometimes that's all I have to go on but wall to wall subdivisions make for tons of bottlenecks and travelways.
I've also learned interviewing skills and reading clients. If I can get them talking they'll tell me just how to connect the dots without even realizing it.

Here's what I mean by aerials in an urban area. This is a fenced and gated former client HOA.

Can't be much more than ten acres. Do you see what I see?

Main travel routes. Not from track or sign but from homeowner and security camera sightings.

And blue marks where I placed sets. Plus a couple secondary trails.

Over the three years I trapped this I never set more than half a dozen sets at a time. Over a dozen each red fox and coyote came of this one. Reds year one and two, coyotes year three. Plus assorted coon and oposum.

Oh, and the house where the trail forks at the road is the HOA president and all the adjacent houses were the ones seeing the fox or coyote.

Yes, cameras are great tools. I always check with the landowners and ask what they’ve been seeing. It does give a good location to start, well that and previous catch locations.
Appreciate all y'all sharing your knowledge.

In answer to the original question, about the weirdest things I run into is possums caught by their tails in a coyote set.
Well that and a coyote/bobcat double on two sets about 10-15yds apart.
