I used a cachet set for years when I first started trapping coyotes. What I had been taught about a dirt hole ( by a fox trapper ) was nothing like I was finding left by the coyotes. So I started to imitate what I was finding. Dig a hole nearly strait down about 8” deep and big enough for your trap to sit flat in the bottom, I was using #3dbl long springs so don’t worry about the diameter of the hole. I would sift some dirt back into the hole and put a chunk of deer liver in on top of about an inch of fluffy dirt. Then sift about 4” of dirt on top the liver, lay your trap in making sure it’s bedded solid. Now sift an inch of dirt over your trap and pack as much as you can get away with. When your done you should have an ugly looking hole about 2” deep with no other sign of activity, I think a shot of fox urine is a nice touch. Later in the year when it got good and cold I would add either a single drop of gland or a qtip dipped in a food lure or a drop of call lure on the back of the hole.

The biggest reason I got away from this set was the effort it took to make it in frozen ground. In early season or if you trap in the south it works well .

Ok, I’ve read that 4 times and think I got it.
But just to make sure, the bait is actually under the trap?

Yes the bait is under the trap by about 4” .

I have a busy day planned for tomorrow, but if I get a chance I will make one and take some pictures of the process.

Thanks for the reply. May try something like that next week, moving to a new property.

Using Golfball’s description it sounds like my version of the posthole set.
Dig/auger a hole (wide enough for a coil spring trap) down about 12 inches. Anchor the trap with a long chain at the bottom of hole. At the bottom of the hole make an indentation and place your bait or lure and lightly cover. Bed your trap solid on top of a piece of bait or lure and cover.
The negatives are obvious...hard ground, and rain. BUT the set is a killer! It is a great change up set.
When I used it I pre-dug my holes a week or two before season and covered them with a board.
I modified the set by using a screw driver and punching a small hole above the trap...about four inches down and placing a skunky or minky lure in the hole.
Hope this helps.

This set and the buried bait set work OK for fox in deep snow.Moreso near the end of the season when fox have a more difficult time hunting and are digging up bones.

Mr Charles digs a hole places bait then beds the trap over that buried bait then shoves a sick down between the trap jaws into the bait. Then finishes bedding the trap and blends In the set so It all looks natural. Then pulls out the stick so the scent of the buried bait can be smelt. I have caught a few coyotes using that set up.

I think you mean 'smelled'
Smelt is a type of fish.

* You don't need to have a hole going down to bait for a canine to smell it.
If you do, you need better bait.

They can smell it buried a foot or more deep.

Is the buried bait set and the cache set the same?

The version I use could be called anything you want, LT might call it a urine set because I spray urine on a spot at the back of the hole.

Well having a twig sized hole leading down to the bait won't hurt anything.

Have you had any problems with them digging up the trap?

The version I use has a step down ledge on 2 sides. I t-stake a road kill something in the bottom of the hole and cover with 4-5 inches of dirt.
Bed a trap on each ledge and anchor outside the hole. I put extra dirt on the sides the traps aren't. And sometimes you get lucky

I’ve not had any trouble with the trap being dug up , but you want to make sure the bait is under the pan .
