Sure hoping so. Leaving Friday for work then be home hopefully around September 2nd and start trying with the bow while on R&R. Been a few years since I got one.

Yep. Got my South Dakota rifle tag this year. 20 years preference! Shot a bull 2 years ago with my bow. Did you get the unit out your back door? Yes I did. Go out about 4 nights a week scouting. Also running 13 trail cameras.

Yup, I try and put one in the freezer every year. Didn't get one year before last, first time I hadn't killed one in quite a few years. I guide for elk so I'm busy guiding pretty much all of the season around here, but there is an area down south that has a late rifle season. Been going down there the last few years, not as good of elk hunting, but a fun area to hunt and the season dates work out to give me time to hunt. Used to hunt a more local area that had a five day longer season than where I'm guiding, so I got the last five days and the couple days I have off between hunters, but the other area gives me up to 11 days and a trip with the wife, also some decent mule deer hunting there at the same time.

![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2022/08/full-37748-148031-elk.jpg) I'm not able to get out there this fall, but I've had some success in Idaho before. The area we hunt is beautiful but brutal. Crazy steep terrain and thick cover. Success rates for archery are in the single digits, so I was pretty fortunate to have called in this guy. He popped up over the ridge at 45 yards and I buried an arrow into his adam's apple. He only went about 150 yards, but as I was following the blood trail I had a MONSTER bull come out of the alders - bugling and then destroying a small tree - all within 40 yards of me. It was amazing. I've heard people try to compare turkey hunting with elk hunting as there can be so much interaction and calling involved with both. Yeah, it's the same thing - to the extent that a 20-ish pound chicken walking up to you can produce the same overwhelming experience that a 750 pound bull elk can. Until you've been close to one, you cannot imagine how large they are and how loud they are. Best of luck to those of you who are lucky enough to be hunting them this year. I'll be back out west next fall.

Yes, we hunt mainly private now, we work for a rancher, but hunt on NF during archery season. We have limited bull hunting access but can hunt cow elk for months and have run of the place. Have taken a couple of good bulls on the property, the best was a wounded bull. We have taken a bunch of cows off the place. All Wyoming elk. Our cow tags are basically OTC because of the lack of private access in the area. We can get 2 cow tags and a bull tag. My wounded bull and some cows. Good luck this fall. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2022/08/full-53905-148047-dscn3279_copy.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2022/08/full-53905-148048-dscn0587_copy.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2022/08/full-53905-148049-dscn9961_copy.jpg)

Nope, tried again for a Kansas bull tag but didn't draw one. So I added another preference point to the bucket. Maybe one of these days. X2
