I don't need a million.......50-100 or so.......

Anyone have Swamp White Oak on their place? I know some parks plant them for shade.

I really am only interested in true Swampers......not any other white OR red oak.....

If you have them, happy to pay what you need to gather and ship......

Thanks!

The leaves have a broader look, with the lobes NOT being as obvious and finger-like on a traditional white oak........

Mark, try Chief River Nursery. They have swamp oak and shellbark hickory seedlings. Great people to deal with.

Yup, I was going to start them in pots and plant them once big enough and YES, protect them with tubes. Our whitetails wipe out anything NOT in tubes or wire!

Thanks!

A friend has had good luck doing them in a bed I'm the garden then transplanting. Easier to keep out chipmunks and squirrels

Mr Zagman I can probably get you some swamp white oak acorns if no one else is able to send you some I always thought they are easy to determine which are regular white oak and which are swamp white oaks They are a beautiful tree when the leaves are all off .I like the color and the structure of the branches .

Hickories are one family of trees that its best to know the Genus/specie name, lots of different and often the same name for different trees.
I have Shagbark (Carya ovata) and Bitternut (Carya cordiformis) growing on my place.
Lots people call Shellbark (Carya laciniosa) Shagbark too, I don't know why, the bark is no where as near shaggy as a true Shagbark but they do.

I know that whether I plant seedlings OR grow them myself from acorns, I will see little fruit from my efforts in my lifetime........(I am 57)

But, I DO see value in making the place better for wildlife, and the next guy will appreciate it!

I have some tamarack (larch) on my place that a guy planted 30 years ago.....he is still alive and I am thankful that he planted them! Hanging my hat on that! LOL

From an old Greek proverb..."A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit."

Different growing conditions and climates but my 12'-18" seedlings that are 17 years old are now 15'-20' trees that started producing quite a bit at roughly 12 years old.

Anybody ever planted saw-tooth oak? I planted 5 seedlings 15 years ago when we bought our home and they are already producing huge acorns. The deer love them. I pick up several 5-gallon buckets full every year and plant the acorns or put them in a pile and put a camera on them. Usually get 200 plus pictures of the same momma doe and her young chowing down on the entire pile in one night.
