For those of you who hold down full time jobs and run traps for weeks on end, what keeps you motivated? What gets you out of bed extra early or staying out extra late every day checking traps? For me it's the idea of never knowing what tomorrow may bring. I'm a little fortunate don't have to be to work until 930 am and my traps are within 5 minutes of home in any direction. Just wondering what keeps everyone going day after day.

For me the December/January coyote trapping period only comes once a year. When weather is good, hit it hard. Soon the fur quality deteriorates and then it’s time to pull and be done and catch up sleep.
I only set as much as I can handle though. Don’t overstretch yourself and get sloppy or burned out. If you do recognize that.
One year I snapped all of my traps and covered them up, took a few days break to do stuff with the family. Went back out and reset and that was pretty rejuvenating. Didn’t take a lot to deactivate or reactivate my sets. I’ve only done that one season but it’s something I keep in back of my mind that is a possibility if something comes up where I need to shut things down temporarily for a few days. All private land access helps too.
Change up your routine helps if you can too. Try running one night. Then next check do an early morning. On weekends go after sunup and sleep in a little. Pics are better on weekends for me in daylight.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I still consider me a novice but to see that Coyote jumping as I am approaching my set gets me coming back for more! I have been planning my route for a couple weeks off and on already, cleaning up and getting my traps all ready, figuring out that I want more MB's, getting my snares built the right way (with all your help). I am pumped for the season!

What gets me motivated Is when I finish a weekend trapping there is always that one left that I didn't catch and i get a chance to go after him again.

Turkey season and out of State turkey hunting trips is what keeps me motivated. The more I catch the more I make. The more I make the better my trips are. That’s more States I can cover, more out of State license I can buy. Fly first class instead of coach. Enjoy the entire trip and not have to worry about spending too much or using my day job money. Trap January through August minus 2-3 weeks of trips and a vacation.

I really enjoy doing it. I work a normal 40 HR a week job but still manage a short line. I even like it better when it actually gets cold. That is when I enjoy it the most. Probably because there isn't many people out in this area past December.

Just the love of being in the great outdoors. Especially in a marsh or on a creek or river.

Give an illegal alien a fish and he eats for a day. Deport him and you never have to feed him ever again!

The love of living free in the wilderness while trapping.

I have a problem. I love getting up early and finishing a portion of the check in the dark. There’s a peace most will never know while out and watching the sun rise. There’s also a satisfaction that comes the day after a catch when you finish putting up fur all night. Not many people can do that for weeks on end. Sometimes I take a Sunday off or sleep in one day. Watching the sun come up over what God created is something special.

Well said. Because of work, I check weekdays starting at 4am. There is a special peace that comes over me as the sun comes up. This year I'm pretty much retired, so will be checking in the daylight. I will still be up at 4 flipping fur, washing or fleshing, then head out after the sun comes up.

Just the love being outdoors, and not at work (12hours)
My work schedule is pretty good, this year I'll be able to check in Day
hours as the month of December I'm night shift.

Fresh Air and outdoors doings what I love.

Let me sugar coat this

For years I worked all day then trapped till around midnight. For me it was almost like I was a creature of the night. It's a whole different world at night. It's quiet and you see things you do not see during the daylight hours. I like catching but the skinning got to me. It got to a point where a guy can only do so much so I started selling in the round and that freed me up to catch more to offset what I lost from not processing and shipping the fur. That worked for me. You have to have a good system and run it and keep looking at new ground.

I have trapped a lot of creeks out of a canoe. I paddle standing up often and with a light on my head would sometimes come home with catfish or see a beaver or rat swimming right under the canoe and get him. At night you can see a lot of fish in the water. Sometimes you can spear them.

The standard motivation - lots of money, beautiful and intelligent women, and high performance trucks!

Honestly, to become immersed in God’s natural world. It is a creation of wonder and awe. Every time I am trapping, I see and hear something magical, observe and learn something new, and give thanks to God for the privilege of being an insider in his natural creation.

For me it’s my escape from the stress of every day life. I don’t need any motivation to go out and do something that I love. I’ve arranged my life around being able to trap, not the other way around.

I am a full time government employee, and while the pay sucks, the amount of PTO I get, coupled with my states 96 hour check law, allows me to run traps on my days off without having to pull them over the work week. I will likely be trapping Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and working Monday, Tuesday and Thursday for probably about 6-8 weeks this fall. Depending on snowstorms I may have to rearrange that a little to drive a plow for the state, but it’ll work out one way or another. Say it snows saturday and Sunday, I can just take monday and Tuesday off the following week. So long as I visit my traps once every 4th day I’m legal.
