I have some logging roads getting completed at the end of next week, Deer Creek Seed Company has a Logger’s Mix that a few have recommended- is the end of September too late to plant?...I can look at the extended forecast but might be better waiting to spring. Here is the blend:

Logger's Trail Wildlife Food Plot Mix is a blend of grasses and white clovers that will quickly produce cover. Logger's Trail is a perennial mix that will grow in low-fertility, acidic or wet soils, and areas with less than ideal sunlight. It’s perfect for wooded trails!

Blend Composition:

30% Elite Forage Fescue
15% Annual Ryegrass
15% Ladino White Clover
10% Alsike White Clover
10% Creeping Red Fescue
10% NZ White Clover
10% Perennial Ryegrass

I would think up there it's too late' The plants need to be estblished before the ground freezes. Check with a local nursery or where you got the seed for dates.

Ive had Rye and wheat sprout and draw deer in fall
Everything else is turning brown or woody .
I don't think I'd plant other seed though.

All that clover should attract grouse too.

Maybe plant winter Rye now and then put your seed down in the spring

I think it would be worth a try to plant now, but what do I know it was 100° here today.

Were not planting anymore this year. Maybe try rye or oats for a cover, might get some growth. We forecast for heavy frost Thursday night though. fall is here. Could put some clover in and hope for growth in spring, but in my opinion wasting money.

I have heard of frost seeding pastures. The frost heaves the ground several times and buries the fine seeds. Think it used clovers, trefoil etc. A bit of rye and oats might work, this fall if they had time to sprout.. old343

I would plant it now. It will over winter just fine. That is what all the weeds & native plants are going to do. You might have a muddy mess trying to plant in the spring, plus the weeds will have a head start. Good Luck.

Extended forecast for northern WI after tonight is a 10 day above average temp range. Through it in and you should get some growth. And have cover for spring hopefully the clover takes and you can frost spring next spring to add in.

I'd plant oats now, gives you some deer attractant fast and then frost seed into the dead "mulch" late winter, early spring.

Like others mentioned, winter rye (heavily seed) and frost seed come spring.

Here's the plan:
I picked up Winter Rye and Forage Oats- I will Frost Seed my clover mixes in the late winter/early spring.
I plan to plant the Forage Oats in kill plots which are the logging landing areas near gun stands.
I'll take some before and after pictures, based on Mother Nature, it could look like the same picture. grin

Here's a pic before the road was dressed, ended up with 1.2 miles of logging road, seeded with winter rye- I estimated about, 80lbs. of seed per acre. Warm temps this week with a chance of limited precipitation- a couple of inquisitive onlookers supervising.
