Well, besides structural weakness (no headers) on a load bearing wall, etc., the window itself appears to be a slider window turned sideways to act as a double hung window (??)

you can't tell if there is a header or not behind the insulation. its a DH window not a slider from the looks of the sash locks. could be on a gable wall with trusses thus no bearing needed

That is true that you can't tell if there is a header behind that insulation or not. But what we know for certain is that there are no 'trimmers' or cripples supporting a header if there is one hidden behind the insulation. We can see that there are only two full studs from the top plate to the bottom. Nothing to support a hidden header

Original stud spacing was correct until Joe homeowner came along ?

Smoke, the facia board fits in the notch on the top, owner says the house was built around ww1, I mactched what the previous carpenter did with most likely a coping saw, glad I had the dewalt.
