Needed a 4-40 3/16” gun screw. Numrich priced at $8 plus $3.58 for postage. Found it at Ace Hardware for $.23. Got a military discount as well.

Is the shape of the head and the slot identical?

some times the hardware store screw will work

sometimes it needs some fitting

what your paying for when you buy screws as gun parts is not having to figure out what screw fits and cutting it to length

to some people that is worth it , LOTS of people don't want to have to figure out or work on things they want plug and play parts and are willing to pay for someone to tell them what screw fits

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Yep. Phillips rather than slot. Holds the mag of 700 ADL in place. Inside the rifle. Bright rather than blued, but out of sight.

Numrich holds a lot of parts you'd have an impossible time finding anywhere else. I'd quick blue that screw just to have no rust worries.
