I made a Tony Joanis style mink set today.
Took a few pics if anyone wants to try a couple.
This is a good set in the North as it still works after freeze up and handles snowfall pretty good.It wont drift in like a box in the grass.
I like to add a rat set on the log.If you use a rat for bait in the box they will plug up the mink set.
Have got doubles on mink too with this set as well as rat/mink doubles.

I also have used this type of set with the box at the end of the log in the grass,a bit quicker to set up.

First off find a good straight spruce for the box stake.

Then at the set location I notch the running log to set a foothold for rats, and stabilize the log so it doesnt tip

Then I throw some gras on the flat spot and bed a no1 ls for rats.
Then I spike the box to the stake, wire in a chunk of bait to the screen and shove the stake in the bottom so the box opening is about 8 inches off the end of the log.I make the stake long enough to go in deep since the bottoms here are generally soft.if the box is too high,I just note that, pull up the stake and lop off whatever to make the box sit at the right height above the running log.

Then set the 120 and its done.Narrow slots for the springs will hold the trap solid when set opening down.

Beaver dams and beaver houses are mink magnets and are good locations for these semi permanent type sets.

When done for the season just pull the box and stake and stash up under a spruce for next year,or spike to a tree for a marten set.

Good stuff and great pics. I would think the 120 would fall out.

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

With narrow slots the 120 is Rock solid.
Sometimes they dont even fall out with a catch.

Wow, learned something! Boco, with that double set do you run in to predation if a rat is caught first?

I never have a problem with small animals getting eaten under water.
Only animal that will fish an animal out from under the water and eat it,that I have experienced is wolves.
Wolves will pull beaver up from deep water and eat them on land.

With the correct dimensions for the box and narrow, deep slots, you have to put the trap in at an angle, one side in first all the way then the other side in then pull the high spring down to lock in the trap

Have you not ever heard of recycling and yes wood is very expensive now days, especially if trapping forms a major portion of your annual income.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Thanks for posting Boco.

I got myself a seniors' GPS.
Not only does it tell me how to get to my destination,
it tells me why I wanted to go there.

3/4 ply sides 7x7 top and bottom 7 1/2 x 7 1/2. -16 inch deep (half a beaver board cut lengthwise)
3 boxes per old beaver board.

Can use rough lumber and 1/4 or 1/2 scrap ply if you want.
12 inch deep would be minimum(good for a mink box)-14 or 16 is better for marten-hold bigger bait in cold weather.

I'll do a few more different ones in the next little while.
I know dozens of different kinds of trapsets.
