Do the state regulated 10x10 wide open box traps work well for bobcats? Making up two tonight and just wondering if a 10x10x30 with a 220 would be big enough for a bobcat to get its head 18 inches in to the trap

Sorry but pg. 58 shows how to use bodygrippers up to 7 1/2 “ on land. Restrictive but can be done. I believe this would include a 220.

Bro unless you have 220s that are larger then the standard 7inches they make them at, then they are legal by 1/2 inch in a manner of boxes or with the trap 4 ft off the ground. Check your refs bro, I know mine quite well

I’m just not sure if a bobcats shoulders would be too wide for it to get 18inches back, I know they don’t like to be too confined and the normal bobcat boxes I see the 220 is right in front of the box opening. Just not sure how well they would commit to the set

I hear ya. For the little cat trapping I do I stick to footholds. Location, location, location.

Yeah I’m looking to use them for some dry land coon, I always here people ranting about coons in box sets. So I’m wondering if I set it on a trail would a bobcat commit. If it is I’ll bait/lure for both.

I don't think a bobcat would be able to reach that far back with its head and get caught. It would have to be quite committed and sort of crawl up into the box I'd imagine.

Go to google and type up "bobcats, buddies, and boxes" and look at that article or copy and paste the link below. I have had very good luck with that box design and maybe you could extend the top lip out to say 12-14" and have the trap sitting back 4-6".

Not really sure if that would count as an 18" recession or not, that'd be up to a conservation officer. kind of hard to explain through typing

Yeah we can’t do anything like that, but those are the traps I was talking about that I see that people use as bobcat sets. Closest thing we can do is a 220 in a 5gallon bucket with the trap recessed 4 inches but there has to be half a lid with a 6 inch opening. Biggest wide opening is 10x10 but with the 18 inch recessed trap. New York is terrible with their regulations.

True, but at least we still have footholds and trapping. Somehow they haven’t taken it away from us….yet

Seriously then they don’t put any warning signs or notices on state land that traps are out and that it’s illegal to touch someone’s trap. They set us up and put us in situations where conflict is amplified against us. Especially on wildlife management areas, that are meant mainly for hunting and trapping, yet let the hikers and people who let their dogs wonder without a leash on these areas and you end up with people freaking out thinking we’re in the wrong for using the area that way. We’re in a downhill fight.

Yeah I trap in a WMA in Sullivan County. A few years ago that happened to me, a leashless dog got caught and the guy freed his dog and stole my trap.
I ran into him as he was leaving the WMA and I was driving in to check traps. He asked if I was trapping and was all irate, told me he threw the train the woods.
I called the game warden and he taught the guy the error in his way. The guy actually believed it was a wildlife preserve.

No excuse for anyone taking a lawfully set trap, but everyone needs to use their heads. Trappers included. A lot of the WMAs are also pheasant release sites and the only upland bird cover open to the public. That means bird dogs and lot of them. Common sense on the trappers part can avoid a lot of issues.

I understand that but this was not the case with this dog, it was a little fe fe doggy, definitely not flushing any birds out of brush.
As I said this guy was irate at the fact that I placed a trap where he walks his dog in the "animal sanctuary"

Unless they just happen to step on a set, a well trained bird dog should only be hunting one thing. There are plantations down here that run footholds year round, including during quail season. Their comment was, “If one of our trained dogs gets in a trap, then we don’t want him.”

I have caught bobcats in NY using a running pole set with a 220. It has to be at least 4’ off the ground with bait covered.

I have been impressed by 160's for Raccoons. Very impressed. No more suitcase. Easier to get the trap off.

220 cubby set in a 5 gal bucket set, per NYS DEC Spec. Aiming for skunk, but bagged a nice 25lb sow.

I agree with Squash. Bobcats can be taken with 220's on running poles provided the pitch is not too steep.v Te trap needs to be raised from the pole a couple of inches.
