steeltraps I run my chain setups the same way and I love it. A little shorter overall than yours but 4 rod swivels and a shock spring (law in NC). It has been working great for me

Would it work to put traps directly around a dead cow/deer?

In WI that is illegal, must be 25 feet from "sight exposed" bait. You'll catch a lot of birds setting on a carcass. Find trails leading to it and set those.

Yes. Also will get every possum and hawks/eagles that visit. Best not to

You're going to catch opossums no matter where. But next to a carcass you will guarantee a buzzard catch. The feds frown on that.

Even a beaver carcass shoved deep out of sight into a coyote den has been known to snag a buzzard. Or so I hear.

Have a little service by this water tower. FIRST you must know your area. No buzzards here in Texas this time of year. Second. O general set back a minimum of 10 yards. Third. With 3 lbs pan tension I dont catch many possum. Maybe because their aren’t as many in the area’s I trap. Have been trapping round dead cows for coyotes for over 35 years. Just release the buzzards IF you catch 1 by accident. Real easy to do. Move cows when you need too. Set under brush or trees when you can. Go with = Flat Set. NO URINE. Catch coyotes before they get to cow if you can.

Coondagger2. I am liking my new set up Did it because in future I may go to states with long trap check times. Not worried about foot damage that much. No dogs. Where I trap. Just dont want to loose 1 in the future to long check and be left with coyotes foot ! LoL!

Great explanation. I was wondering myself, forget that a lot of states don’t have 24hr check laws.

I was fortunate to tag along on that adventure. They had some great cat hounds...

Thanks Wanna Be. Even in states with 24 and 36 hr checks. When one is = often running lots of traps. And pushing the limits of the check laws. Feet can be in bad shape. I have seen where = few more twist and a West Texas coyote would have been gone. But to be fair. Their will ALWAYS be trap fighters. IF you catch enough coyotes. Even with great equipment. You WILL lose one. Someday or sometime. Yep. Lost 1 once on 24 hr check in MB 550. Swivels fine. Not grassed up. Just left me a paw and 5 inch of tendon. Was a large male trap fighter. It happens. But I want to do my part to make sure it don’t

Swamp Wolf. We got to spend about 2 hrs with Roy. We talked about the mt lions he brought to Florida BUT the thing I personally enjoyed most was. His tales of wolf trapping in Mexico ! Las Margaritas wolf story. Was well worth the drive. I had read in books about Roy McBrides famous wolf before. But to here him tell the story. Is well worth any drive of any distance

Good news? 11439 acres broke up into 5 pastures. I get to look at tomorrow morning. Can wait for 730 am ! The bad news? It borders a HEAVILY flown and 365 day a year coyote controlled ranch on back side. Plus. On the otherside. Is a county trapper we know. HE is a Ogorman recommended for the job county trapper. SO = tomorrow = I feel like. I will find some coyotes that have been hiding OR find a place with 11439 empty acres ! LoL! But. At least it will be new country is the most positive way I can look at it. So i will. IF their is sign. I will set some traps and see if I can post pics of them up. If nothing else. I will post up some. Land scape pics

Hey Alabama,
Can you use toothed traps in your state ?

I've had some LPC's since the 90's. Quality traps.
I like a little longer chain on those drags though
