Have an abandoned farmhouse that I have permission to trap around and the land owner said he saw 3 skunks dart under the house while driving through. He saw a bunch of skunks there last year too. So I'm thinking they have a den under that house.

I've never purposely targeted skunk but I just ordered 6 Duke DPs and some Dunlap's Skunk Lure. Planned on having a marshmallow in the trap with a glob of the skunk lure. Plus I also have about 6 conibear boxes I was planning on baiting with sardines.

Does this sound like a good idea from targeting skunks? Will the commit to a DP pretty regularly baited right and on location?

Yes they do. 160s at entry points or trails work well too. I get a lot of skunks in DPs with cat food and other goodies. Fish baits work too.
I get enough skunks in DPs set for coon that I believe they should be a good skunk tool in right conditions.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I prefer skunks in DPs to almost any other trap. Reason: the dispatch is much easier

I'd like that one explained. . .

A DP is a foot hold trap
A coil spring is a foot hold trap
Dispatch is easier ?

I started selling essence to O'Gorman in 1981 and thought I had struck it rich as he bought every 16 oz. glass pop bottle I could fill. Have progressed a little from there so I'll chime in with my experience. If you are going to market the entire skunk, a DP gives you the options of no foot damage for the taxidermy/bone market, set out in the trail or farm field you can maneuver the skunk down wind where you have a left or right shot to inject and finally you aren't dealing with a someone's Farm Store Havahart Cage Trap that you can't get your syringe through the smaller cage openings. Every BG I have used from Belisle to Pioneer has a percentage of lost essence at the strike point so I don't want to waste anything if I am dealing with a skunk (ADC or fur). Regular foot traps lose or reduce the bone taxidermy value. the only better trap that I use is a 10" diam. PVC pipe trap but they are not as versitile for the obvious reasons. My take....................... the mike

'Wife' makes a good point about marketing the entire skunk.
In this market today, a good prime skunk hide is worth more than a raccoon.

A good full striped hide sells fairly easy once tanned. All four feet attached, even better.
The essence is in high demand, as is the empty pods once drained to make 'sweet skunk', a lure fixative.

The fat scrapped from the pelt can also be sold, (to be rendered down ) as can the skull, once cleaned.

Once the entrails are removed, the carcass, rotted down, can be used as a lure base or as a liquid bait and it makes a fine canine attractant inside a deep hole set.

The entrails (guts) ?
Well, a crow's gotta eat too !
wink

I don’t use a lot of foot traps other than DPs because of my arthritis. I can set DPs on the tailgate of my pickup and put a piece of plastic pipe in them to keep them partially open till I actually set them (taking out the pipe at this point).

Anyway, since we can’t discuss dispatching here, I’ll leave that up to you.

Teacher,

I carry a small piece of 3/4" x 4" pine in my setting bag and use that as a platform to push the sping down until I get a 3" section of PVC pipe in the hole to make setting very easy by hand at that time. As far as your comment on the dispatch being easier with the DP, I agree. You always have them by a front foot which make them easier to inject that when caught by a back foot in a foothold.

57 years trapping. It's who I am. Every day is still as exciting as it was when I was a kid but a little more work.

Caught one today! I'd say they work pretty good, not much stink.

X3 wouldn't say dispatch is any easier, but by-products tend to be intact.
