I have a couple of properties that get trapped a second time. I set them after Thanksgiving for 2 weeks, then go back after New Year's. I will catch as many the second go around as the first. At least in my area, as you catch them, new ones will filter back in.

I'd simply be careful about scent and I'd also set up a couple days before an impending light snowstorm. Waxed dirt at this time of year if you have it, otherwise, peatmoss.

Don't put a stick under your pan and don't use raccoon for bait.

It's ok Matt I'm pretty sure coon would make good coyote bait here. I have had coyote eat, marten, otter, and wolverine, and porkies, so coon would probably be an upgrade. smile

I've had several coon killed by coyotes. At first I thought dogs, but no.
And possums being taken.
Couple others I spoke with agreed.
We also agreed this was not yet internet trapper approved.
Until someone popular says this, we are just liars lol.

The one coon I shoved under creek bank roots and covered with rocks. They (two) came back
and dug it out but never ate on it. I did later catch one coy there and it was bad with lice.

Eaten also, or just killed?

I've seen fox killed by coyotes but they were just tore up, not eaten.

Same here. A coon carcass will rot away, nothing but flies and maybe a buzzard. Have seen coyotes on game cameras avoid a deer gut pile / carcass that had a dead coon or 2 thrown in with it.

Even up here a coyote has to be starving before they'll touch a coon. One winter I laid down 2 beaver carcasses then piled 15-20 coon carcasses on top.Temps were probably 0 -10 above so everything froze solid. When the coyotes found the pile they dug under the frozen coon to get to the beaver, which meant they dug thru the frozen ground too which was set up like cement.Coon are the worst bait for anything here.

I’m pretty sure we have much better tasting prey here. Cameras also show traps clogged with coons/possums and coyotes coming by checking them out. Hog cams on peanut piles show coyotes and possums eating out of the same peanuts together. Even have pics of a coyote on one side and a doe on the other side eating off the same pile. I’ve caught a ton of coons/possums and have never had one killed in a trap. The only thing ever found dead was a fox that was shot three times with a 30/06 by a “hunter” who wanted to put the “tormented” fox out of his misery. And yeah, he was kicked off the property by the landowner.

45 years of trapping in southern GA and I've never had a coyote kill a coon in a trap. Had domestic dogs kill em and a bobcat killed one once and partially covered it after eating a little red meat.

Those Louisiana coons must be tasty to those coyotes.

Apparently not, lol. Now that you bring it up, it’s time for me to start laying down the does!! Only got about 40 to take out to help balance the ecosystem.

There have been a LOT of studies done on coyote travels, trapping/shooting, etc. All of them have shown quite convincingly that once you remove coyotes form an area, coyotes from outside the area fill right in very quickly.

Not even thinking you would lie, I just wanted to know if they ate them, as prey as they were labeled. I've seen several killed, but not eaten.

When I go back in later I act like someone else has been there and do different sets like the others mentioned.

If you are trying for a certain pair I like set 3 traps per coyote in pairs because if you snag one a lot of times you can have both if you have the traps set.

Just passin through

I have not done canines a second time but have run coon lines twice. The times were about 3-4 weeks apart. Coon numbers were fewer but bigger due both to more days older and more older coons. About half as many in general, maybe less. Did it twice for rats on a wadable river. I caught almost as many a month later as I did the first time, but that may be due to the line managment I use. ( This is totally weather dependent for me.)
