I am trapping predators here in central WV, and we got a couple inches of snow, i have 6 sets out right now, all Duke #2’s in flat sets and dirt hole sets, they are all bedded and covered with peat moss. Do I need to rebait/relure? Brush the snow off? I am completely new to the snow part of things, and need some advice/guidance, thanks!

If the snow isn't crusted, leave them be. When it melts and refreezes is when you may have to do something. I've not used peat moss, but it doesn't matter what you use if the snow freezes a hard crust over the trap it needs removed or they won't go off. But if it is soft you are best to leave it undisturbed. Nothing blends a set better than an inch or two of fluffy snow.

Do you mean that they need to be dug up and reset??

Be easy~

When it melts, you can add a good bit of salt to the trap beds or soak with a water/propylene glycol mixture to keep sets working. I usually feel a lot better with new peat/dry dirt especially if a hard freeze is coming again.

If there is just a crust of ice over you trap, you can flip it off without having to digging up and resetting your trap. The little bit of wax dirt or covering you lose by removing the crust shouldn't matter and saves you the time of rebedding.

Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

Like I said, I have never used peat, with wax dirt or sand you don't need to, just take the crusted snow/ice off the top, if you are using regular dirt, once it gets wet from melting snow it will freeze, so yes you need to dig up and rebed. My understanding of peat is that if it is dry it sheds moisture for a while, but once it gets wet it is like a sponge and will soak it up and freeze, so I believe it will depend on how much moisture it takes. There isn't that much moisture in an inch or two of fluffy snow, but maybe someone who uses peat can chime in with whether it will freeze if that much snow melts on it and then it gets cold again.

I can tell you when peat does get wet and freezes, it starts to form stalagmites in your trap bed. You have these little pillars of ice/peat moss sticking up somestimes a few inches above the ground. Thats why youll need new peat or salt/deicer in the bed to keep things working if the trap beds get saturated.
