For those of you that want snow for Christmas, be careful about what you wish. As many who follow me on T-Man know I like to outguess the weatherman and watch it very close. This map, of course, covers mostly Ohio, but I am sure the outcome of this situation will affect a much wider area. The last time I recall anything similar to this in my part of Ohio, was in 1978, when the great blizzard hit. We knew before-hand that we were going to get some snow. I was working the desk and radio for Licking County Sherrif's Office. All we knew when I went on shift at 11:00 PM, was the temperature was dropping fast and it was getting much colder. At approximately 12:15 AM, I received a warning call from the National Weather Bureau, about the coming storm. It was coming from SW with winds at 75 to 85 mph, temperature to drop into low teens, with potentially 10 inches of snow and at its rate of travel should hit us about 3:00 AM. I notified everyone up the chain of command as was customary and notified the Sargent and 2 officers on patrol. I notified the small villages and towns around the county. At about 2:30 AM, the snow started falling and the winds picked up to probably 10 to 15 mph. I ordered the 3 cars to go stationary in towns or villages, with easy access to routes back to base. Our furthest west car was in in Pataskala, which was the point the storm would hit first. The storm hit at that point about 2:55 PM, and the phones went crazy... not from people calling, but from every alarm in the southwest went off. My officer radioed in and stated when the storm hit it ripped the metal awning from the store he was sitting in front of completely off of the building and shook his patrol car like it was a toy. Well, I ended up working through 72 hours straight with only short naps here and there. By daylight, the bulk of the storm was over. A good part of the county was without electricity and many people were completely snowed in. We commandeered all of the 4-wheeled drive vehicles we could from dealerships and any other source. Most every county and township road were blocked. The second day we were able to get assistance from the National Guard with 2 dozers and 2 road graders. The East end of the county is quite hilly, so, every valley road between those hills was closed. I personally saw snow drifts over 21 feet high. I went with one of the dozers operators, to clear several with very high drifts. On the one road we came across 2 vehicles that been abandoned and almost completely covered in snow. I radioed in and asked for directions and was told... "Get them off of the road." So, they were pushed over the bank through the fence, with one of them rolling about 3 or 4 times. Well... back to the present... Here are the current projections... Pay close attention to what you see happening around midnight on, on Wednesday night Thursday morning. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2022/12/full-8541-161676-wheather_forecast_dec_23_2022.jpg) If you want to follow this live, here is the web page.... https://www.wunderground.com/forecast/us/oh/heath/43056Tight chains my friends and a Merry Christmas and Prosperous and Healthy New Year. I remember the 78 blizzard, that was a humdinger. I don't think were in for another one this time but have often wondered if that was like a 50 or 100 year storm. It's for sure gonna get cold.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Been below 0 in the region for some days now. -30, to -40 standing temps in many areas. -65 wind chill . Even west of the divide here.
Snowing steady. Three feet in the valleys and stacking up for the next two days. My big hemlock and cedars look like ice cream cones.
Just like Montana winters should be. Bring it on. Every spring , a number of coastal move ins leave. They can't handle it.
My semi wild rabbits hate it, they're parked on the porch eating the pellet ration I bought them, and bread treats . Put old socks over the ears of your Black and Guss cows, and horses !
Got all my fur , shearling, and snowshoes out.
Take care, Garry, and all.
Yee haw.

I really, really hope you are wrong Garry. I was 8 years old, but remember the Blizzard of 78 well. We lived on top of a hill and had snow deeper than my thighs in Cincinnati. The low areas had much deeper snow. After several days, my father and a bunch of other men from the neighborhood, loaded up in 3, 4 wheel drive vehicles with chains on, grabbed snow shovels and headed out for groceries.
My friend Don, who lived about 6 miles from where I live now, had a 16' drift of snow in his nearly mile long driveway. He was snowed in for 41 days, until the National Guard dug him out with payloaders.
Remembering that, I try to stay at least a month ahead on all our feed for our animals. My farthest barn back is about 150 yards from my house, hauling enough water that far back, in similar situations may be nearly impossible. My stock may just have to eat snow for water.

Supposed to be a day or 2 this coming weekend down here at the Ga-Fl line that the daily high temps are not gonna get out of the upper 30s.
Been a while since we've seen that here.

78 was a big one in the north of Germany as well. I was doing a practical 2 month in my studies working at a coal power station. I got there in the morning on my 50 cc moped I had at the time. By lunchtime non essential folks were told to evacuate the place and for the emergency staff to be called in. Buy the time we were ready to leave, there was no way out and they ended up taking two of the big front loaders with 12 people in the bucket to take them home. I lived the furthest way out, so I got a ride in the cab. The next day I found out that my grand parents were snowed in on the other side of down a ways out. So I grabbed a sleigh, put some tarps, shovels and supplies on it and made my way through the 15k hike to their place and stayed with them for 3 days shoveling a path to the road. After that the army got there with tanks that had snow shields on them and they freed the roads and I went back home. My grand parents and our place had wood stoves so the power outages we had did not affect us in any major way as we could cook on those stoves and keep the place warm ish. During that time people really pulled together and helped each other out a lot more than normal. I think we could do with another one of those winters. It would help bring folks together more than anything else ever will I think. Looters don't tend to venture out much in those conditions either I think. And it makes protesters stay home as well.

Garry- Is that bottom panel the forecast wind speed ? Looks fairly pleasant actually unless the wind gets cranked up. Those showers on Thursday evening is something I could do without. Stay safe !! Looks fairly sunny just like my forecast ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2022/12/full-3455-161694-screenshot_2022_12_20_at_09_03_22_7_day_forecast_62.95n_155.62w.png)

I remember that 78 winter. Glad I purchased a 1977 4wd 3/4 ton suburban the year. It was a bull in the winter.
I pulled a few out of the ditch or even down the road.

White, Cleveland’s all time low was -20f with 56 hours of temperatures below zero. TOP THAT Only 56 hours ? Easy ))))) January 27, 1989 The official weather service downtown location here showed 75 below zero. The substation on the edge of town.....away from the heat sink area of the power station............was 82 below zero. The ten days that overlapped this date never got above 55 below. There are Tee shirts here with the date and a thermometer on them. There was one vehicle ( vechile) that was kept running for ten days in case someone needed transport to the clinic or airport for medevac. It was a diesel panel truck. kept running in a hangar. Several households that heated only with oil , had to be moved, into shared quarters with folks who heated with wood because number one heating oil congealed and would not flow. Of course all propane stopped flowing too. One guy tried to remove the felt filter element from his fuel oil filter. Got his gloves wet and lost all his fingers. The week after that it warmed into the minus 40's for a couple weeks. I believe Gulo will recall this cold snap and I am pretty sure that Boss Dobbins was stationed in Fairbanks at the time and has pictures. I think the longest cold stretch I recall was December 26, 1975 through January 20, 1976. It was colder than -55 that entire time and below -65 many days.
