Are break away J hooks designed to be crimped shut or does that mess up there holding strength? My first time making my own cable restraints amd realized the j hook breakaways can knock free fairly easier...

There's a tool for closing them.

You close them once. And only once. And then don't reuse them.

We had a nice long post on this before but forum move ate it. If you deformed the shook style bads. It changed the poundage. Just can't remember which way now

I can tell you one thing.

The ones I've used, big coyotes on a dead run, can pop them open on long trail snares without entanglement to slow them

S-hook shaped BAD's manufactured in The United States are garbage.

I've lost far too many coyotes using them, but my hands are tied in the state I live in.

How about the Senneker ones? They any better? More options for poundages with them looks like

Sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand

You need to use the right BAD for the right application. TThere is no one size fits all. If you use the lightest, the #265, then you better be using them with a torsion style stinger kill spring. They arent designed to be used without. You could get by on a #385 if no spring, but better with #645 at a 350 lb release.

And while you at it, use a supermagnum for all canine snaring, they flatten everything regularly.

But must have a Stinger of some sort on there.

Take a look at the vaules:

BAD Update Dec 2022

The Senneker-Elite line of BADs were broke tested in North Dakota in 2015 and again in 2022 at Alberta Innovates and Technology Futures for the Fur Institute of Canada. The 2022 Canadian results were consistent with the results obtained from North Dakota in 2015. The following results are based upon the averages of testing from both jurisdictions.

Senneker- Elite #265 - opens at 165 lbs*

Senneker-Elite #385 - opens at 240 lbs*

Senneker-Elite #645 - opens at 350 lbs* (not tested in Canada)

Senneker-Elite #750 - opens at 440 lbs*

Senneker-Elite #1000 - opens at 600 lbs* (not tested in North Dakota)

PA has pretty strict regulations with cable restraints. I think 350lb max for breakaways and no entanglement. (Might be 375?)
