For you guys back east was it the worst storm in 100 years or is that more hyperbole from politicians and newscasters. While November and December have been bad here I sure wouldn't say they were the worst in a century.

Hardly. If it wasnt for the cold and the wind, it would of just been a boring 1" of snow that would of been gone by noon type of storms.
Dont say this was the storm of the century if your within earshot of Joe Bastardi if you dont want a weather history lesson.

I don't know about the storm of the century but 40 inches of snow in 2 days and 45 MPH winds sure piled it up fast. Sure, made the snowplow grunt several times pushing it.

Storms of the century in New York State were the blizzard of 1966 in Syracuse, blizzard of 1977 in Watertown and the blizzard of 1978 in Buffalo.
These latest ones were nasty but certainly not the worst.

walleyed I remember what the news dubbed at the Blizzard of '93 in NY. I drove 60 miles through the worst of it from Ransomville NY to Buffalo in a '64 VW bug, lol. Having the engine in the back sure helped, it had great traction... I was pushing snow up over the also helpfully rounded hood. But I made it.

70mph winds here and 3 feet of snow. Not the worst storm in the last 23 years but probably the longest sustained winds and single digit temps. Just a few weeks ago 5 to 6 feet of snow fell but not the strong winds. Lake effect snows here can be tricky unpredictable things

We just got slop and really cold out of it.

It was chilly here but that’s about it. We had warm temps when the precip got here, so rain it was. We then experienced some strong winds that dried up the roads before the temperature dropped. It was as if somebody prayed that’s what would happen.

I have to wonder what Buffalo and other towns do with all that snow! It has to be hauled somewhere and dumped. I don't know about those cities. Here years ago they would dump snow along the edge of the river on the ice or into the marsh. Like everything else that's now become an environmental issue. Snow is now piled on land adjacent to the river where it can melt and trash stays on land not right in river. I know this because I used to walk the piles with my metal detector. That snow coming from in city has a lot of trash in it. So most cities even smaller ones have dump sites somewhere as close by they can control run off some. I've also seen where some now have a huge heater unit where snow runs in one end water out the other. Then goes into city storm drain les the trash.. Here I think the storm was pretty much none event. Where it was bad it certainly effects more people than it would have 100 years ago. Probably more about the effects on number of people than the storm it's self. Just more people. Mac

Because weather can be very different from one area to another calling any storm "A ONCE IN A LIFETIME EVENT " is mostly open to debate . Today New York state is reporting 27 deaths as a result of the storm .That is a large number and for anyone that lost a family member or friend no matter what that number may be it was a dangerous storm .Where I live in PA the storm started with some snow/rain mix . Enough to cover the roads with slush .Than it turned to all rain The colder temps and high winds arrived after the rain was just about over .It ended up as a sunny day with increasing winds and dropping temps .Thurs night the temps where in the mid to upper 50's Sunday at 6 AM it was still very windy and 3 degrees . And it did not get above the mid 20's all day long .I can recall a dozen or more winter weather storms that where far more impactful just in the last 30 years . And if I checked my hunting and trapping notes there where most likely more than a dozen .There is no doubt for some it was very dangerous . And the storm impacted a larger then normal amount on the US Not only was it not the storm of the century it was not even in the top 20 of the storms we had since 1993 which will be 30 years ago with the beginning of 2023 just 4 days away

Although the potential and conditions were lining up for some really nasty weather effects, other than the cold and constant wind, nothing really bad materialized.
We had a weatherman, in Florida, that really good and honest and explained things really well... he once explained the "100 year storm" statement. He explained that statement didn't mean there would be such a storm every 100 years, that that is what had been calculated and the worst in a hundred years had been such. He said, you could have such a storm every year for 5 years and such a storm was not relegated to only happening every 100 years.
I think I explained that correctly. Now we can get ready for a 100 year flood. (Tongue in cheek)

It may have been bad other places but it was just cold here.
No matter where you go there you are.

Garry- Pretty much. They're freak events. Closest thing I have seen is the flood several years ago when half of WV got washed away. Anyone that lives in low lying areas are probably familiar with the various floodplain maps if they're forced to by flood insurance or tried to build anywhere near a creek .
