trap-alaska OP trapper T Joined: Nov 2007 Carlisle, PA	I have always staked my DPs with pogos and cable but after listening to some people I tried a few grapples. I prehooked them all to brush and had two pull out this morning after wrapping up in the brush and pressing the spring. I never had a pull out when I was staking them in more open area, away from entanglement. Am I doing something wrong or is that just the price to pay for the speed of setting grapples?

Centex Trapper trapper C Joined: Dec 2017 Central Texas	I think it is just bad luck. staking with no entanglement is more of a sure thing. But nothing is fool proof. Just keep setting and catching. Think the only time ive lost coon is when they dived off the top of a bank with 10 ft of cable. trap-alaska OP trapper T Joined: Nov 2007 Carlisle, PA	So to follow-up. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong but I caught three more coon in DPs on drags and the tangled in the brush and pulled out. I caught 5 around cattails and weedy fiels that hung up nicely and did not pull out. I caught 22 staked in teh open and had zero pull outs. These are fairly new Bridger DPs and feel pretty strong. All of the pull outs had the chain wrapped right up to the trap so they could get some leverage. Basically, I had 100% pullouts on DPs that were wrapped tight in the brush and 0% in any other situation. I'm thinking I will keep using the pogos and staking away from cover since that seems to work best for me.

As i recall, they had the heaviest trigger pull on the market so when the trap fires the coon might not be as deep in the trap as others like a well adjusted FB1. http://www.sniperstrappingplace.com/tmansearch.php

Bob trapper B Joined: Jan 2007 Northern Nevada	Could be that being wrapped up so tight is allowing the coon to press the springs up against the brush and take off enough pressure to pull out. I would not run drags on any trap I thought would catch a coon "I have two guns, one for each of ya."

G Hose trapper Joined: Jan 2011 Surry county, NC	Are they tangling up around trees/ logs? If so they are probably pulling on the trees/logs. Anything sturdy enough for them to pull on an it not move. What I’ve had happen myself. I quit staking close to such things a started staking so they are out of reach of such things.

I stake with 20" stakes where they can't reach anything. I also use some 6' cable extensions and half-hitch to 4" to 8" trees at the water's edge but I'm careful to stay away from brush. Only coons I've ever had pull out of DPs were wrapped up tight in brush like the op had... Btw...I use only Ztraps. Last edited by Swamp Wolf; 12/27/22 05:28 PM. Thank God For Your Blessings! Artrapper16 trapper A Joined: Jun 2019 Arkansas	I’ve had to really watch where i stake or cable my traps to because what I’ve found is if a coon is tied to one tree and can get around another tree or even a limb that I didn’t see up on the tree that I cabled to. They will use leverage to pull themselves out of the trap. I don’t believe that they are compressing the springs at least not the pullouts I’ve had.

I don't have time to go find my catches and where I trap there's too much chance for trouble if the critter makes it too far. I use either earth anchors, 2" staple driven into a tree or log, or aircraft cable wrapped around log or heavy cinder block. With any of these, as someone else said you need to make sure there isn't something nearby the coon can grab on to or they will pull themselves free.

Wanna Be trapper W Joined: May 2018 SW Georgia	All I have used up until last your were Duke DP’s. Bought some “like” new Bridgers from MTP last year and I’ve yet to have a pull out from either. I guess if there’s a foot there I’d consider it a pull out. And most of these are cabled to a tree. I’ve had them wrapped around other trees and brush so bad I’ve almost cut the cable after dispatching the coon, lol. How they can weave in and out and tie knots is beyond me. Only “drag” I’ve ever used for them is F150 brake rotors and haven’t had one move it yet. Those are mostly thrown in the creek with the DP placed at the edge of the water.

They are the standard for most trappers in this area, the more I use them the less I like my super stakes. BUT they are not good for other areas/situations. "I have two guns, one for each of ya."

jabNE trapper Joined: Aug 2013 Louisville, Nebraska	If you ever had to drive home to get an extension ladder so you could get your coon and trap on a grapple out of a big cottonwood tree… Not a fan for coon, and I stake all of mine solid ever since that day. Pick locations where the catch is already out of site, it’s sooooo much easier than climbing trees. Jim Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
