Add them light? If not is probably why.

We got 1 chicken egg today. We don't have any chickens under artificial light, but we get some eggs during the Winter anyway. They'll likely start laying again tomorrow, when the temperature warms up.

I have not but they had been laying daily. I'll see what happens with the days getting longer now.

Factory egg farms have lights on 24/7 to get as many eggs as they can.

I have lights on timers inside and outside the coop so the chickens get 16 hours of light each day. We were averaging 9-10 eggs a day up until the cold snap. Our average dropped to three eggs a day over the last several days.

I think the extreme cold stresses them out.

Production should pick up again as we are getting back to near normal temps.

Eh...wot?

We have a light on a few hours am and again pm, timer, so they get 14 hrs total.

Older hens have slacked off but this year's hens all laying almost every day.

Yes, what Lugnut said; my 5 hens quit laying all together beginning early winter and continued for a few weeks; I added a light bulb on a timer that comes on around 11:00 pm and runs till daylight in morning so birds get their 14 hrs of light. Two days later they started laying regularly again.

light is one factor -- feed and temperature are others -- ours stopped with our temp change -- lots of factors -- also factors such as rats, egg eaters, or predator issues also seem to raise an issue.

Did they run out of water, or did the water supply freeze. That will do it. old243

I read the subject line and broke out laughing. If I was a chicken I'd quit laying cold turkeys as well.

I had a dip in egg production during the hottest time in the summer. But my girls have been laying good all through the cold times. I don't have any artificial light for them but they get a pretty good high protein diet .... more so during these colder days.

Mine went through a molt in late September that continued until late October I didnt get any eggs during that period. I have 24 hr daylight on them summer and winter. From November on I am getting eggs every day, five, or six from nine hens. A couple of hens are old and stopped laying.

I feed a high protein diet, ground meat scrap with cooked rice, and commercial all purpose feed ,and bird seed/ with corn scratch, daily.

My coop is about +10 and need to get the eggs before they freeze.

I have heated water buckets with nipples that never freeze so they have water access at all times.

Eggs can be safely frozen for a year. Just crack the extra eggs in a bowl, mix the the yolk and whites together and pour into a Ziploc freezer bag and toss in the freezer. If your hens stop producing for a while or you don't want to run lights and heat all winter you'll always have these to get you through.

Eggs in their shell keep for up to 3 month at room temperature. Longer if you rub them with vaseline. NOT STORE BOUGHT EGGS as they have the outer membrane washed off and have a short shelf life and have to be refrigerated

Like said again if you have light, feed and a little heat they do well in the winter months. I’m taking care of my neighbors birds now since he’s out of town and getting couple dozen eggs a day. He has light for most of the day, a heater going and feed/water available.

I always ran a heat lamp with a guard on it all winter and 2 lamps if it really got cold. The nice thing about a heat lamp is it has a clear base that gives off a nice amount of light.

Now if the bird flu would stop coming around I’d be a lot happier.
