Don't write checks your butt can't cover.

Means ya better be able to back up what you say.

Don't bet your bottom dollar.

Poker term, bottom dollar meaning everything you have, your whole stack.

Not trying argue since I've never heard this saying before but historically a poke is another word for a pocket and plumb is square so I would have thought a "poke and plumb" town would mean a new town just laid out; so it would be a perfectly square pocket town. Maybe idk

poke was also used to mean sack , like a "Pig in a poke" was to buy something sight un seen

Foul idioms
The chickens have come home to roost.

Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Keep all your ducks in a row.

A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush

And why did the chicken cross the road

"Colder than the balls on the brass monkey" In the old sailing days war ships carried cannon balls on a rack made of brass to prevent rust. On several of the commissioned British sailing ships the racks were ornamented as monkeys with many hands holding the cannon balls in place. As cold weather set in well sailors being sailors versed the saying.
