I once shot at a groundhog with my .44 mag pistol with open sights. I didn't get it, but I definitely hit it. Blood and hair at the hit site. I measure it out at 105 yards. Got the bugger a week later with my rifle at 30 yards. When I shot at it with the pistol I hit it in the front leg. I showed it to my mom who said it was probably putting it's arms up to surrender when I shot.
Our local range has a 250, 300, and 400 yard gong. The 400 yard one is up a steep hill. It's amazing how many times people will say they hit the 400 gong. But in reality what they're hearing is the sound of the shot echoing back at them. I've sat there and watched bullet hitting the dirt all around it and them getting all excited because they "hit the gong".

Got an idiot who is a friend of my neighbor. Claimed he had a one hole 1,000 yard rifle.
I don't get how any grown man can say stupid crap like that and expect anyone to respect him after saying it.
He's a grown man!!
How many lies will people believe before they realize their own idiocy?

Had more than one old timer tell about how dad would give him 3 22 shorts and he better bring back meat for each bullet fired. Then talk about shooting rabbits on the run with a rifle. This was usually after I said I was rabbit hunting with a 12 gauge. I got two different old guys to go hunting with me but I think their eyes had got bad. Neither shot a single rabbit running. I only see a few of them before they run so used a shotgun. Was pretty common to jump a covey of quail too or see a squirrel Tarzaning though a tree too. I am not picky. Besides, you can make a pretty good stew putting in different animals. ( I did not know what gumbo was yet) Thats what I was making though. Had never heard of Roux. I just mixed flour and milk half and half, stirred it up good and then slowly poured it in to thicken things up a bit.

I had a guy at the shooting range once tell me that he shot an elk the season before at "587 yards". I said to him, "you must have the rifle zeroed at a few hundred yards, that bullets going to drop a few feet at that range". He replied; "Nope, zeroed at 200 yards, it's just a flat shooting rifle, I just held right at the top of his back".
Yea, right; I'm not a ballistics expert, but I know enough that he either got lucky and was holding waaay over it's back by accident, or he was lying. Hmm.... Remember the caliber ? Could run it in my ballistic app real quick. Depending he actually may have not been exaggerating TOO much No I don't remember the caliber, but I doubt it was anything out of the ordinary, as I recall the guy didn't seem to be a sophisticated shooter. However, just for fun let's assume he was shooting a 30-378 Weatherby, 180 grain bullet at a MV of 3400fps, zeroed at 200 yards. What would the bullet drop be at 600 yards? Let me just take a wild uneducated guess and say 48 inches (or more). Could you run the through your calculator? I really do wonder if I was way off in my judgement.

My first deer with a muzzle loader was 206 yards iron sights off handed. 8 point standing looking straight at me covered his head with the bead and center punched the throat patch with a 240 grain saboted 44 cal hollow point. NTR! 41 years ago!!!

Put enuff lead in the air and you just get "lucky" sometimes.
What was that Teddy Roosevelt quote? As long as there is lead in the air, there is hope in the heart!

Plug a 6 mm Remington into that with a 100 grain partition bullet . 48 grains of 4831 . Zero at 200 but better at 250 . Guys I used to hunt with made that shot several times in Colorado years back . All of them carried 6 mm back then . Need a general velocity as well

I have "jokingly" told people that I could shoot the eyelashes off a groundhog at 200 yds... some people can't pick up on body language and tone LOL and have gone on to repeat the story.
That said, I have made some pretty unbelievable shots (that I freely admit were 99.9% luck)
1. Jackrabbit - full run, right to left at about 150 yds with a Ruger M77 MkII in .22-250 across a snowy, cut soybean field. Luckily there were several witnesses. I played it off like I do it all the time LOL 2. Hen bluebill - 60 yds with a Mossberg 935 - 31/2" #2 steel. After my friend missed at 20 yds in the decoys I casually mentioned "If I get this, you're fetching it" lifted my gun and dropped that duck like a stone. Turned to him and said "Fetch it up" absolute straight face, dead pan... he was in disbelief and actually wandered about halfway to the bird before he realized I had just got lucky with my shot. 3. Groundhog - 200 yds in a carrot field, offhand with the Ruger... right after my friend told me I couldn't make that shot.
Everything above aside, I have done a lot more missing than I have hitting over the years, my kids call me a "storm trooper... because you always miss, Dad!" Aren't kids great?
Just happy to be here.

I've shot 60-70% on grouse. No, they weren't on the ground or on a limb.
