One of my best groups I've ever shot was with my custom made .284 Winchester chambered pre 72 Sako well under a inch 10 shot group at 100 yards .
A quick young fella I was fortunate enough to meet and become a friend of Tom Fry from Billings Mt he was quite the marksman and worked for Remington back then what a great man !

You're friend along the snare line .

Yup....was lucky enough to split the ball..once ..during a competition

I don't have anything that is impressive. I did shoot the white buffalo target (1123 yards) at the NRA Whittington Center with 2 of my 6.5creedmoors. I have also shot a 18"x18" steel plate at 1400 yards with a 6.5creedmoor.

For shotgun stuff; Over the course of a few ATA trap shoots I only missed 2 singles targets out of 800.
During trap league one time I shot 25 out of 25 from the 27 yard line shooting left handed when I am normally a right handed shooter.

Best group ever was a <.1" for 3 shots at 100 yards with my .220 Swift. Looked like one 6mm bullet hole. That was a case of my zigs compensating for my zags. But that gun will shoot 5-shot groups at 100 in the .3's with somewhat boring regularity. Shot a 500m 3 shot group with it that was slightly under 2"

Daughter has a .308 Win that will go .25" to .3" for 3 shots at 100 with a load I worked up for her. This gun is just a freak of nature (deer rifle) and I told her if she EVER thought of selling it................. I GET IT !!!!!!!!

Best shot I ever made on a critter target was 486 of my steps (I take about a 38"-39" stride) on a small, young groundhog with a Model 70 in .300 Win Mag. This was eons before affordable laser rangefinders. I actually shot it when it was on all fours.......but too far back and it started to drag itself toward the fence line. So, I shot it again, hitting it in the front quarters.

that is a beast of a rifle , no wonder you shoot deer from 781 yards , you would be plum worn out if you had to carry it up to 281 to plug it like a normal person.

very nice shooting, I bet it came from a whole lot of time at the range shooting targets at every distance between and writing down all your data and a good range finder

that is what people who make the claims from the other thread don't realize a lot becomes possible with time , equipment and most of all practice and data

not sure if you have ever been in the pits when people are shooting from that far away , that deer might well have been laying on the ground dead when the report got there

we were behind the 500 berm in the pits with people next to us on the 600 steel we would year the crack , then ding , then what seemed like seconds later a distant report, until they started shooting suppressed then just crack , ding

Pete, maybe it just me, but before I had that rifle built I had 2 custom built 7mm's, both had lilja 9 twist barrels, both would shoot 3/8's at 100 yards, both would run 160's at above 3300 fps, at 750 yards one would shoot 2-4" groups on average, the other would not break 6" on average. the only difference was the 2-4" rifle weighs 14# the 6" one weighs 8, I have taken a handful of deer with the heavy rifle beyond 1K, one at 1350 yards. for me weight makes a difference.

and BTW it took me 26 years of spending money and thousands of rounds down range before I would attempt a shot on a deer beyond 500 yards, have since taught around 20 folks from jr. high students to collage girls to old hunters who just didn't understand ballistics how it can be done if you put time and effort into it.

Way better to teach them to become "hunters" than "shooters". cool

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

there is room for shooters and hunters

it would probably do a lot of people good to learn technical shooting first , then learn to hunt

not so they can take 500+ yard shots but to teach them solid marksmanship and form the habits and muscle memory first.

When I was about 16 I was shooting clay pigeons from a hand thrower out of the air with my 22 lever action mossberg

Best shots on game was probably a heart shot on a running bear at 340 yards with the 30 06 savage 110.
Another memorable one was at a bear running straight away from me at about 150 yards.Put a silvertip right up his arse and into his vitals with my 30 06 remington 7600.

My best shot was a running coyote going up a hill at 375 yards in the back of the head with a Sako .223

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!
