I can still hear the naysayers...... It's not the breed it's how you raise them -. Bullcrap!

I sure hope that little one has no lasting scars mentally or physically. My love goes out to that child may recovery come swift.

"Burt Baker III, the owner of the dogs, told police his dogs enjoy chasing people on bicycles. Baker was arrested shortly after and charged him with reckless conduct."

About as clueless as it gets...

county dog catcher needs fired for not putting them down on the first complaint

it is inhumane to shoot to wound as well as a poor choice when you want a stop.

always shoot to stop , unless dispatch then shoot to kill the fastest way possible.

stop and kill are two different things

if you want to kill most things draw an line from the top of one ear to the bottom of the other ear and repeat forming an X then shoot through the X to the tip of the nose.

if you want to shoot to stop you shoot whatever is available that is most likely to be a vital organ and a target you can reasonably hit , lungs , heart , major bone structure.

I don't have anything against the breed , the breed has a purpose , the issue is the owners of said breed seldom have a purpose, seldom understand the breeds purpose and thus don't treat the breed with the respect a powerful tool should be given.

as a breed it is a VERY powerful TOOL with great capability

think of a shotgun a very powerful tool , so you treat them with great respect you don't point it at anyone , you keep the chamber unloaded when traveling because the only thing keeping that hammer from falling on a round in the chamber is a little notch in metal , if you bang it hard enough it will let go.

the problem is to many of these owners use flawed logic of well the hammer hasn't fallen yet so it can't fall.
some even go so far as to remove any safeties, let it get into dis-repair, lighten the trigger then go for a bouncing ride with the mussel pointed at vital parts and then are all surprised when it goes bang one day.

A shotgun is under the control of a human. A dog off its leash is not. Sometimes a dog will respond to a humans voice command and sometimes it won't. If it was 100%, military and police dogs would not be leashed until the HANDLER decides somebody needs attacked. The shock collar manufacturers would be out of business. Free ranging pitbulls, not hunting hogs or something, need killing

that is exactly my point with the analogy.

you control the shotgun , you unload it , case it, keep it in a safe direction , keep the safety on , keep in good repair.

even most police dogs are on leash unless specifically training or released to take down a suspect

heck I have seen 2 police dogs fight , only people believe in equality , dogs your top or not.

you don't , neglect and abuse the shotgun , take the safety off , leave it loaded , point it at your back then go for a ride on the bumpiest washboard road you can find and wonder why you got shot.

you wouldn't leave a loaded shotgun leaning against every car around a bunch of kids at a playground , allowing free ranging pits is nearly the same thing , a recipe for disaster.

Them dogs are made for working and that sure as heck don't include babysitting duty. SMDH
I don't think they should all be shot, but they should not be loose around anything that you don't want killed. I like the shotgun analogy posted above, you don't mishandle a pit same as that shotgun or something bad about to happen. There are entirely to many idiots in this world mishandling the dogs and I don't see it changing without heavier consequences handed down to those that do mishandle them.
Sure do hope that youngin makes it through this with minimal scars, and the dog owner meets up with karma.

Had some idiots that moved in a mile west of me one time that had at least a dozen pits tied up out back. I stopped and told them that if any of those dogs got loose and came toward my place I would shoot them dead and then call you to come and get it. They didn't like me much. Thankfully they moved.
