What’s everyone’s favorite footholds for muskrats?
Is there any benefit to double jaw coil springs for rats specifically?
Are the old victor #2 square jaws as good for rats as they are for mink?
Looking for all suggestions, thanks in advance!

Hard to beat a #1 longspring or #1 jump for rats in my opinion.

1.5 coilsprings (any of them), 1.5 longs, haven't tried #1 longs but assume they will work. Mark Steck runs pretty much only #2 square jaws for rats and he loves them.

I like the double jawed 1.5s as most of my muskrat trapping is on creeks so coon will always be an issue and Iong chain rather than use drowners. The double jaws keep the foot chewing down.

I like # 2 double longsprings as the weight drowns quickly. They tend to bed easier (lay flat).

In my opinion the size of that you use depends on where it is being used. Bigger traps are nice when you know that trap is going to get them drowned asap.

As stated above "depends on where it is being used". Where I've trapped most of my life for rats ( and mink mostly ); I prefer 1 1/2 LS, and 1 B&L jumps, for footholds. These traps have been fitted with 22 to 24 inch chain with an additional double swivel near the trap (5-7"). Also the long springs have either a Barker mink pan or one of my own mink pans(the same size as barkers) added to them. The old #1 B&L jumps all had the larger 2" round pans stock.
These traps have worked very well for me with the longer, heavier chains near either deep or faster moving water that I have were I trap rats and mink.
Just in case your interested in trying this type of trap, John Rockwood has some available right now on the Trap Shed, at very good prices. Gary

I never trapped hundreds of rats a season, but found #1 1/2 long spring do the job good.I set mostly toilets, notched logs or floats to drown, and the 1 1/2 has better weight than a #1 to drown them.
On another note,160's or 120's set in dry rat crossovers and trails take a lot of fur-mink otter and rats.

Depends on the set, but on a float, I'd say a Duke 1.5 CS

I use #11’s, 1 1/2 coils and #2 square jaw Vic’s, all have there place and all have extra chain on them. My favorites are #11’s with extra chain and the bigger pans from wild river.

The old 1.5 underspring jump is mine but are hard to find and pricey now. I now remove one spring off any of the 1.5 coil springs I can come by cheap. Single spring fire much easier and are easier to set. Can be reinstalled if needed. Spring from the chain side for open water and pockets, spring opposite chain for winter in house trapping(what few I do anymore). I like the B&L underspring stop loss for non drowning location and floating feedbeds(smaller in my area that can't float much weight or are often in heavy weeds so getting out to drowning water is if"y).

I've learned enough thru the years to now know that I don't know enough. KNOWLEDGE IS FREEDOM.

Without a doubt, Duke 1.75's with weakened springs and added chain. they catch high on the shoulder and have a larger pan. Long springs are much harder to bed, rats can tip them by stepping on the spring.

Where and When are the big questions. Fall time of year on rat houses with good amounts of open water by the house a #2 or 1.5 coil, but if it is a cattail choked marsh right up to the house, then a # 1 B&L Sure Hold or #1 V Stoploss - round pan only!... Frozen marsh, trapping in the house #1 LS or #1 jump. Open water where bank runs are apparent, circular colony traps can't be beat (series of BG's here are a 2nd choice). Can also be used under clear ice if your time fits your weather (ice formation).... In the Spring time on floats, #2 square jaw Victors or RJ #1.5 coils. In the Fall on creek banks, beaver colonies, farm ponds or any stable river condition a 1.5 coil can be used for a lot of other animals beside muskrats. Seems like there is no "silver bullet" for me on this question just excuses for expanding my trap supply BIG LOL. ............................. the mike................. P.S. in this drought (less than 12 in. of moisture from Nov. of '21 to Current Jan. '23) there are no local muskrats of any amount to worry about harvesting some. ..................................................... the mike again
