I know this has probably been asked a lot but I couldn’t find a definite picture in a thread that looks like this. Just curious because the rest of his fur looked good.

There was actually some clumps of fur at the catch site in the fight ring.

I have seen that a couple times in trapped coyotes. I think it is a stress reaction from being trapped, they start to pull out their own fur.

I dont see the sores mange makes either. If I didnt know better I would say it had been in the trap for several days

Mange would be scaly.

Maybe an old wound that was infected?

Thanks for the answers and no Danny, I check em every night. He did have a front foot and a hind foot caught as I had made a blind set after my main set was getting dug up and flipped.

That fur was pulled out recently....probably by its mate after it was caught.

That ain't mange.

Another dumb question. I know coyotes aren’t worth much but if it ain’t mange is it worth skinning if that’s the only damage?

If you plan on tanning it and making something out of it yourself, yeah. If not, don’t bother, with the coyote market the way it is you wouldn’t get enough out of it to be worth the time you got just in skinning it.

Even if that were the case that doesn’t happen from being left in a trap a few days. Our check law is 96 hours, so in theory I could have a coyote in a trap for up to 3 1/2 days and I’ve never seen that happen

In the photo its looks like its getting broke in the back anyway. Even a good market without that rub it would be section 3 at an auction or low value

In other words caught to late in the year. Way past prime. Right now cats are getting prime and so are beaver.

Yeah I believe when I see patches like that on the rear it's a result of fighting for dominance as the mating season is very close. Our shoulders rubbed out early down here I believe I had my first rubbed coyote around the 15th of December..I'm glad I started in November but I believe next year I'll start November 1st.

I only skinned 12 Coyotes before shoulders started to rub out. Some of the best looking dogs I caught were after Christmas too. And their shoulders were gone

If the fur is there in the catch circle, it happened in the catch circle. It is not rubbing, it was pulled out. It could be by the trapped coyote or another one.

My bet is another coyote. They tend to be cowardly backbiters in general and a trapped coyote is at a great disadvantage for spinning away from a backbiter.

Not mange, my guess another coyote was trying to make it leave, maybe it was trespassing

An excellent reason to always make a second set nearby.

Yes, sometimes they still walk off, but you will get them a lot of the time

Well, technically it was there, just not far enough away, lol.
