Been married for over 25 years to a woman from Puerto Rico. Have been working in the inner city Pediatric and STD clinics for over 30 years. The Wife has tried patiently through the years, attempting to teach me to speak properly. I seem to get by at my career working at my clinics only due to repetition of the same thing being said over and over through the many years. Often folks think I speak fluent Spanish or that I am either from Puerto Rico due to speaking and pronouncing words properly and clearly. But by wearing 2 hearing aids curtesy of Uncle Sam and damage to my hearing. I cannot understand what is being spoken directly to me. Even the wife with her heavy accent, gets frustrated at me, due to the language barrier in the household. I don't wear my hearing aids in the house, because I don't want to hear blah, blah, blah daily. Still, I am only highly proficient and fluent in using outrageously offensive cuss words.
Oh, and just an FYI... There are many different types of Spanish dialects. Even the translators are having a difficult time commutating with the clientele.

My 8th grade spanish teacher taught Mexican/South American Spanish. My 9-11th grade teacher taught Spanish Spanish. Mostly there's some different words between the dialects. Vosotros and ustedes gets a bit trickier

There are some differences in new world Spanish but it is a myth that somehow they are so different that native speakers of the different variations have a lot of trouble understanding each other. Often the differences have to do with proper names of different things like the flora and fauna, fruit and veggies etc.
In Mexico names for animals and plants often have Nahuatl (Aztec) origins. Like "coyotl" for coyote. In the Andean region of South America a lot of the vocabulary has Quechuan (Incan) influences. Like "chuchaqui" for hangover.
And coastal Spanish like Puerto Rico and other Carribbean countries is shot at you like out of a machine gun and they tend to swallow the last consonant. My wife is always complaining that Mexicans don't speak proper Spanish (Colombian Spanish tends more to Castilian Spanish) but like I always tell her, language is dynamic and always changing. We likely would have some trouble understanding the speech of our ancestors from 200 years ago.

Big part of this country belonged to Spain and Mexico prior to becoming part of the United States. And with a 1/3rd of the world speaking spanish what wrong with it? They should start by teaching English, reading, writing and speaking. They are not doing that any more. They could move into math and add reading a clock and counting change. If you you don't teach them at home they will not know how. I lived in Spain for two years and ten months. I speak some Spanish.

This should be getting taught in elementary schools nationwide. Then I think that English should be taught in Spanish schools. The Serbians came LEGALLY and they learned English and we hired them because of it. They also learned EVERYTHING in our History math English and laws and our company sponsored them on their Citizenship tests. They WANTED to be an AMERICAN!!! The Spanish should do the same!!!

Kind of like understanding an English man, Australian or Canadian (or Texan,Yooper,Bostonian, etc...)

I have been trying to study to communicate with the bulk of our new work force. It seems that even the alphabet has changed since I first studied Español. Ch (che) and Ll (elle)are apparently no longer considered distinct letters as they were 40 years ago.

I took it in High School because a couple of the foreign exchange students were hot. I remember enough of it to order beers and say something to get thrown out of a NICE Mexican bar.

I have nothing clever to put here.
