I trap in an area with high cat populations and see relatively little scat. I see places where I believe a cat has scooped out a spot but no scat present. I believe a lot of bobcat scat gets eaten by coyotes. I can place fresh scat taken from a recent catch at a set and many times it will be gone the next day. I usually end up eventually catching a coyote at these locations.

Most of my cat sets are bobcat scrapes i find alot of people just overlook them some are barely noticeable. Cat trapping can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be i dont tend to use flagging as i work lots of public land.
Youvan make your own scrapes add gland and urine and pick up lots of cats without the hassle of spending alot of time per set. Cats are as territorial as coyotes imo Droppings and scrapes do catch alot of coyotes as a change up if you been hamnering them hard as well
Somr of the worse sheep killers ive eorked on were taken on bobcat droppings and scrapes.
Same concept as s coyote scent post just diffrent animal

I use rub rocks as well snd really like them but mostly scrapes
Flashiest set ill use where legal is take a pinch of bird down feathers mix them up in a pile of brush about the size of a cst scrape

There i said it....

This makes up about all my sets they are all flat set variations but if I'm up on the mountain I will throw in a cubby.

Personally, I want my cat sets to be more exclusionary to coyotes.

Back when coyotes had value it was different. But times have changed.

But I don’t want no $5 coyote plugging up a cat set these days, especially when you think it may be up to 60 days before that cat comes back around. I don’t have 60 days to wait.

Can it be common for Bobcats to take a while to come back through?

In my country females run anywhere from 20-30 days and Tom’s could be on 60+ day loops.

Setting on fresh sign here means you may never catch that cat during season.

Just my thaughts on it

I catch alot of coyotes that have been hit hard in bobcat type sets its nothing over the top its just useing a bobcats territorial nature to target either or
If he is around the sheep cat or coyote its got to go Cats can do alot of damage on lambs and even adult sheep. i dont mind catching coyotes in cat sets personally. Im a coyote trapper cats are fun and worth alot more but coyotes are funner and thats what im after
You will help your cats out more of you fight the coyotes in those areas imo

Thst being said most of my setups are really simple and straight forward

Droppings. Or a bobcat scrape with a little gland lots of cat urine

I have had older or coyotes that up and leave when they encounter stuff come in the thick stuff and kick a bobcat scrape around and hit the O chit button.

As far as time it depends can be over night or over 60 days
Hope this helps

AJE,
About 10 days +/- for a tom bcat to make its rounds here in the SE US.

Female bcats about 4 or 5 days.

All depends on quality of habitat and abundance of their prey.....

The bobcat footholds I have out have exposed pans. I also strategically placed sticks around them to help guide the foot. What I've noticed though is that after a snow, my sets naturally look different. What I've been doing after a light fresh snow is removing the snow from the pan. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think that metal pan will stand out from the snow & give cats something to want to step on.
I'm finding it hard to remove snow around the trap to make my foot guiding sticks function as I intended. Some of 'em I put half of the length of some pine needles around the trap, hoping that'll help direct them (but not dysfunction the trap).
