For yall guys that sell hens or pullets...

Since eggs are up to 5 or more a dozen in some places are you asking more for your hens and pullets when you sell them due to the price of eggs?

I know that when calf and lamb prices go up so do cow and ewe prices.

I just wondered if you take into account the value of the eggs as a factor when pricing hens.

No, but I am thinking of selling or trading one of my laying hens .... I would trade it for an old side by side or a new Chevy Silverado whistle

Some of the hatcheries sell started chickens. They are not cheap. I don't remember which one I saw it on or what thy wanted for them, but it was a hard pass for me.

I sell production quality, egg laying pullets for $25.00 each. On larger purchases, I sometimes sell pullets for $20.00 each if they buy 10 or more and sometimes $20.00 each only if they buy 20 or more. In the Spring you can sell huge numbers of pullets. Other times of year, especially going into Winter, pullets sell slowly.

If you buy large numbers of chicks, most hatcheries sell over hatch chicks very cheaply. I bought a total of 12,000 chicks last year, at 25 cents each, to sell for feeders for reptiles. I got close to 1000 extra chicks with the 3 purchases of 4000 chicks. I bought them already gassed, but the hatcheries typically sell them for the same price alive.

To buy over hatch chicks, just call the hatchery on their shipping day, ask what they have left and ask what they want for it or make an offer. Most chicks, especially male chicks, get thrown away or ground into feed.

I sell fresh started pullets for $25 each and rotate out my flock so all my birds are <2.5yo. I sell my 2.5yo birds for $15-20 each depending on variety. I have noticed that a lot more people are interested in the birds now.

A guy got hold of me yesterday and wants 12. I sold them for 18.00 a piece.

That's more than usual for me but egg prices are up and I didn't really have to sell them. I was kinda hoping he said no but he didn't.

So I sold them.

I have a incubator I can hatch some out or buy some. I didn't didn't I think of over hatches at the hatchery

I'm not set up for 1000s of chick's though

The hatcheries usually sell smaller numbers of over hatch chicks for $1.00 each and usually throw in a lot of extras. Otherwise, the extra chicks are just trash for them.

You can buy other birds, besides chickens, as over hatch too. I've bought geese, turkeys, bobwhite quail, coturnix quail, chukar partridge and ringneck pheasants too.

MacFarlane Pheasants, Inc. sells over hatch hen pheasant chicks for as low as 5 cents each. About 1 in every 10 or 12 chicks will be a male, which a good ratio for restocking.

People are definitely worried about egg prices. I sold more bantam hens and roosters in the last three days than I hoped to sell this entire month and next. Except for some late hatch and a few extra roosters, I am down to my 2023 breeders, from last year's hatch. I may try to winnow down some of my 2022 breeders, that I planned to use this year again, to just the very best. I wish I had more to sell. Chickens don't usually move well until the weather warms in March. January and February are usually the worst 2 months of the year for selling poultry.

This week, if there's any available, I'm going to try to purchase a large amount of over hatch to immediately sell and start to grow out to sell.
