I am smoking that bacon with hackberry. I think its delicious. I have some mesquite I picked up but I like to grill steak with it. It burns hot and you get a real nice bed of coals.

I sell hickory, apple and cherry to a BBQ place. They tried pellets once and went back to the real wood.

I recall Kingsford use to have a factory somewhere around Somerset. Is that still in business?

There was another charcoal place that made the real stuff south of that area. Coulda been in Clinton county but I cant remember the name of it. Recall it was around where you turned to go to the hatchery. Been so long cant recall details anymore. that was likely before pellets even existed.

Yes still puffing and spreading black dust everywhere. I'm about 5 miles from them. School system has a "field day for all the elementary schools right before summer. I've picked up a trailer load of bags from them to take to each school back when I worked there.

Don't get me wrong nothing better than sitting around a REAL WOOD smoker waiting / tending to it. Heck I got a fire pit that my girls love. Use butt cut from trees for their stools. I'm just trying to tell you a pellet smoker doesn't poision the food and can create a delicious piece of meat ALOT faster than a real wood smoker. "real wood" being a term that DOES apply to the pit boss pellets I use...

I really wanted my pit boss to work for the ease of use. I didn't like having to buy pellets or plug it in but saw the advantages and gave it a shot. Unfortunately I got one that the computer went bad on and didn't finish my first cook with it. I didn't want to get another one after driving 45 minutes each way to hget it across a toll bridge and then again to take it back. So I got something that didn't have electronics to go bad on.

Did you go thru the reset ? Mine did that the first time because it got too hot. The oily film that coats it was burning off . Mine has 100's if not thousands of hours on it. In warm / sunny weather I cook on it 5 days a week. Most meats I cook on it take 2.5 - 3 hours. Heat it up then forget it . Pork butt/ whole chickens take longer.
Providence what model did you have. Mine is the Austin XL

I don't rember the model it was just under 700 inches. It went through the initial pre burn q5 mins longer Tham the instructions said. I turns it off for 30 min or so to get the meat ready. Went back started it watched ti for about 15 min to get up to temp and run for a while then went to do other things went back later with no smoke it was cols and through an error code. Called pitboss she said it needed a new computer then acted like it was good news and I was in luck that they would send me a new one at absolutely no cost to me and it would be in my hand in about a week. I asked her what that would do for my 4 deer quarters it was not cooking and she didn't have an answer. I took it back to the store. And got an Oklahoma Joe. It worked from day one.

I use my pit boss pellet grill a lot more than I did other smokers due to ease of use. I use it roughly 5 times a week in the summer and once or twice a week in the winter. I'll admit in the winter is gets pretty cold out there in my speedo. grin

I just open the door on the woodstove and take out a shovel full of coals, throw them in the Weber grill. Wait a few minutes and start cooking.

Yes Kingsford in Somerset Ky and one in Tompkinsville Ky , Cowboy charcoal in Albany, And had one in Monticello Ky i sold thousands of tons of wood there over the years . Now as we speak Cowboy is sitting up a new plant in Texas for the Mesquite wood. You Texas guys need to start gathering up your Mesquite wood now for some good side hustle money coming.

awwwww Cowboy is the one I recall. Don't remember the details but seems like some scrap went out of the old Gambles plants to them at times.
