I’ve heard in the past, probably on here, that frequent exposure to cold can cause poor circulation. If you’ve found this to be true, what’s your experience been with this. Is it temporary, permanent, should it be cause for concern?

I’ve been running a small beaver line for a few weeks now. This type of trapping is pretty new to me. I’m usually dry land trapping or setting one and a half’s in a creek. Now I’m sticking my arms into ice cold water at most every stop.

I’ve noticed when I wake up lately that my hand is almost always asleep. Sometimes just holding a coffee cup very long will cause it to go to sleep.

I have a regular check up scheduled with my doctor next week so I’ll certainly ask him about it but, if it is caused from exposure to cold then I figured plenty of you on here would have experience with it. Thanks

Cold will constrict your blood vessels. When you stick bare arms/hands into the ice cold water , like I have been this year since my guantlets developed some holes, it takes some time to recover. If you already have poor circulation, this likely will be worse. So good insulated guantlets, or were jersey gloves and a long sleeve shirt that wont roll up on you when you put the guantlets on helps a lot.

Sounds like carpal tunnel symptoms. On your dominant hand?

Yes, or some other cause putting pressure on a nerve. If your fingertips turn white or blue it is circulation but what you described sounds more like nerve involvement.

It does seem to be my dominant hand, can’t recall it happening with my weak hand, but I also am mostly sticking my strong hand/arm in the water when I can get away with using one.

I do have a pair of gauntlets but just can’t get comfortable using them. The lack of dexterity makes me nervous and usually frustrated, not to mention i eventually fill them up with water. I may have to force myself to use them.

I bet your doctor will set you up for a nerve study with a neurologist. Not sure why but my carpal tunnel would get worse when I laid down at night and as it got worse it would even wake me up at times and felt like my forearm was on fire. I let mine go too long and even after surgery I had same symptoms but much less. They did another nerve study 6 months later and said it still showed mild carpal tunnel. They should be able to tell with a nerve study if it needs surgery or not.

This does make some sense because I don’t feel the typical pain and tingling like you normally do when recovering from your circulation being cut off.

Hopefully find something out next week. Pretty sure I have gout in one of my big toes too. Hope this isn’t a trend.

When my hand would get numb or start tingling usually shaking my hand would take the numbness away.

Just put your gauntlets on when you're placing the trap. One of tge reasons i like CDRs and TS 85s is that i can set these with gaunts on.

It ain't the cold. Your wiring harness in your hand is getting pinched.
If it was the cold, it would be affecting both hands and your feet, because they are all the furthest from your heart.
